Symbolz

First the count – nothing new to report:

Whichever way it plays out there will be a bounce at the 1050 mark. 1000 is when the Gates of Hell open and the fun begins – with some luck in 2010 – forget about 2009, it’s over.

Alright – here are two – I’ll have a late breakfast now (Mrs. Evil slept in) and then follow up with more.

ED is at 5 year resistance – so sweet. Will it paint a throw over? Possible, yes – but after this parabolic rise the odds now support a drop. Don’t play this one with puts however as the ATR is only 1.3%.

CNP has been quite resistant in the past few monhts and its parabolic rise should be near its end. Resistance now and if that holds at 15.25. ATR only at 1.6%, so not exactly a hot option play either. Although that could change if we see a fast drop here and perhaps even Mr. Vix kicks in.

X made me a shit load of money last year.

This entry might be early but it’s worth trying with a tight stop. X is a mover and its ATR is over 3%, so I’ll dip in with April puts.

CENX has gone exponential and almost vertical. I like how it’s now running into a small cluster of resistance. If it doesn’t hold here try again at 15 – if you take it here I’d st a stop slightly above that. BTW, this one is a runner – ATR is close to 5% and that was on the way up – that’s the stuff I like ;-)

Expecting CI to be at 29 in January – but I’m getting April puts as IV is so low right now, plus it might take time and January puts are not a good deal due to all the days we lose.

LUV – although I love Southwest (it’s my favorite airline with a perfect safety record) I have no compunction about shorting the heck out of it at 11.5. But wait for it – let it come to you – or at least wait for a weak candle.

MRVL at 20 – and even then set a tight stop as it might run to 22 – this one got legs.

I am going to watch ED, I am not too sure how well resistance levels from that many years ago hold up. The resistance at 43 was plowed through on the first attempt and that level was only a year old. Support/resistance levels are only a matter of psychology, there is no ethereal force stopping a stock from breaking either, and as such, I think it is governed by time frames and memory. I will scale in on a failure to close above this resistance.

  • yudhisthira

yah, still gotta watch out for hamburger.

  • http://centrifugaldeforest.blogspot.com/ Centrifugal_Deforest

WFC acting very strong. If mkt comes off the lows here, which might be a big IF… but mkt breadth is not that severe and stocks are more or less firm relative to currencies' extremes, then wfc will explode up

    so thinks me anyway

  • gmak

Gap up on Dec 10th open for SPX has been filled here. Usually indicative of a bounce coming – but this market looks tired. Stil….

Gold puking its guts out, can't have physical delivery issues, time to sell enough paper to drive those gold buyers to panic and sell.

  • I_got_Prechterized

Nice! I get back from dropping the kid at preschool and see a nice little acceleration in selling. Anybody else long the dollar? What level you looking at on the DXY to exit?

isn't it funny how SPX follow EURUSD, of course only on the way up. Like right now!!

  • Gerbil_gold

don't want to go all Stocktock on you, but does anyone see a H&S on the XLF 9month chart?
    are we at the neckline?

  • http://sshamster.blogspot.com/ Stainless_Steel_Hamster

I think 3 hours ago you asked what the next 45 minutes would bring… I said

    now for the second part?

  • bubble jeopardy

island reversal in Oct., has the appearance of a roof pattern

  • Gerbil_gold

    confirmed. thank you bubble.

  • Rd99Hse1

Getting close. XLF was one of the few that has stuck with that formation for the past 2 months. Most others “negated” it.

    Neckline more at $14.

  • gregn

I was thinking about what we were talking about a couple days ago, about market manipulation. I do not think it would take as much volume as you think it would. When volatility is created, the bid/ask spread widens and the amount of shares needed to create a price move reduces drastically.

  • vasiltrade

think euro 1st will see a hi big level around 1.427 and then all together UP!

  • Carl V

Well if you ask me, WFC did also show a H&S and has it confirmed below the neck line. I think. Because it is not a perfectly symmetric one. But it at least indicate that XLF could follow. And then….

nopes, but pee-wee still in jail

    curse of the paedobear

  • http://sshamster.blogspot.com/ Stainless_Steel_Hamster

nahh, you can do that on small ways if you have 1st choice like GS, but nothing major, you'd take more than you want and then see it go the other way

  • Rd99Hse1

You're right about WFC. It may touch back at $26.50 – then it'll have to re-confirm itself as a short. The rest of the bank index is much more lethargic here. But still, I'm charting the ranges as they develop – lest I take more losses for lack of control.

*Centrifugal De. is long WFC for the time being.

I welcome the return of the bearish count! Thanks, Mole. Also: according to The Slosh Report http://www.gmtfo.com/reporeader/OMOps.aspx less $$$ was withdrawn than previous charts indicated. Nonetheless, we're getting there.

  • gregn

Mole, wicked play on X last year. Sold your puts at the perfect time. The $VIX was near it's zenith at this point.

  • spudthorpe

Mole, I've been trading options for quite a while and I've never seen the term “ATR” before. What does it mean? Thanks.

  • http://centrifugaldeforest.blogspot.com/ Centrifugal_Deforest

1 to 3 days max, so just a trade here
(based on the fact that it is holding up in all this pressure today AND my 'super secret' indicator)

If we close well above lows I will look to sell into the open tomorrow; if we are still dealing with lows later today (overall mkt), I'll blow this out by the close

  • Carl V

I understand your position – not the same time frame. And even on the daily time frame, one can say you are playing the upside reaction towards the neckline!

  • I_got_Prechterized

hmm, this is looking strangely identical to last months opex. Nov 19th, the Thurs before opex was a big down morning with 1/2 the losses recovered by the close. Fri the 20th was a flat day. On Monday, we were off to new highs. If there is a PPT(and who knows if there is), is there anyway they allow a selloff the last week before Christmas? I'm guessing many retailers will pack it up if this isn't a decent shopping season.

  • Chi-Town Deadhead

What does Spud do after that? :) All you did was show Spud a bunch of links. It's all so confusing.

Spud, open the file called Citrix and allow GG to take control of your desktop and he'll gladly complete the tutorial. :)

It does not quite work that way, TDST levels are never targets, but the way price acting at those levels ad to analysis. So, just by looking at this chart there is no way to say how high price will go. These Setups provide high r/r entries/stops, but never targets (not often at least)

I think it is wishful thinking but who knows…nobody can say that's for sure. Why not 81.8: the first very significant pivot, and also the objective of a inverted H&S if DX would now pull back just below 76 to build a right leg. That is my (not-too-wishful-because-a-bit-too-slow) thinking and it would also form a W1 on a new bull trend. but you might be right after all with a run to 83 without correction…will see…

  • gina2001

    Thanks for the warm welcome.
    Does Kemal post here?
I will try to stay on topic.
I think the markets are bloated overseas. Sorry, but that is all I have for now. Not in the mood to talk markets. First Anna gets mad at me (i guess because of my looks) and then RIMM goes up AH before I can do anything to combat it.

  • creepy

counts had been made and 1095 was expected… see my charts…

    http://www.creepytechnicalanalysis.blogspot.com/

i am expecting a E truncated as final wave up in this very very perfect triangle…

    if mathas works on 0.618 x C will give E 1115 to a top… but i am very concerned about 2 things:

1st – E can be smoller… or short but in yhis kind of triangles normaly is short and dont reach the target…

    2nd – we can be in a 3 of 1 of 1 of a p3 or C already…

if D finished on the target 1095… than we will go higher… 1115 (i am very concerned that we dont reach that… this time…. ABCD were perfect 0.618 every time…)

    see u guys

I am a female, and she turned on me on a dime.
I finally figured out why she banned me! She thought I was a master trader until she found out I shorted RIMM today. Then she jumped to conclusions and thought I was an amateur.
Sorry Anna, I am not amateur, plus I have only been doing this for 4 months. I have a lot of upside potential. Plus I am nice and males are attracted to me.

I learned fast that playing earnings is one horrible idea (unless the bets are small). RIMM cost me nearly 20k a couple years ago (twice I went long before earnings and HELD – baaaad move)

I do find it strange that Anna would act in such way…she's usually kind to all types of traders and very helpful.

I want to thank you for allowing this to be my temporary home, but I will be going now. I just want to clear my name and the moles.
I am a 24 year old female from California not a master trader who has their own site.
Anna, I am sorry if I upset you. You were very nice to me at the beginning and were very patient. I am sorry things changed, but they did. Best of luck with your site, it is the best trading site on the net (sorry mole). Sorry again and hope our businsess associate Kemal is fine.

Hi Ultra right now it seems that the EUR is bouncing back so far that correlation is still in tact. But it does seem that the SPX is lagging a bit compared to the RLs we have seen on the $DXY.

With RIMM having beat and ORCL having beat, I suspect we either have a small bounce or end flat into OPX my target is 1100 :)

Hope you have a great holiday Ultra

1030 is a slight penetration, unsustained, of the MA104, it is also close to iv of 3 what is fitting for a 4, aditionaly if gold had climbed as expected to 1175 we'd have a nice wave 5 down for spx:gold at .87 (i'm thinking of recounting that one and giving spx:gold a truncated 5th in september)

    Hi Dave,

Karl actively trades, and does so very carefully. He does a video every night at the close for members. He uses EW and is very objective in his analysis! Much like the Zero Hedge team, he has his finger on the pulse of this financial mess.

Don't mean to offend, but I respect him so much.

I bought some of those creepy crawlers (March) about a month ago as a lotto play.

Nice blog you've got going! Miss you!

Gotcha, I confused “bottom of the trading range” for meaning bottom.

I have posted a lot of great short setup charts and the only person that ever commented was AS2009. Every single one has gone in the direction that I proposed save for BIDU, but it did not hit the sell trigger anyway. I take that back, you commented on my X sell setup a couple of months back, I made a ton off of that H&S setup that you and I discussed. I love posting charts, but I do not think that anyone trusts my analysis, so I am saving my breath.

  • http://trading-to-win.blogspot.com/ DavidDT

you cannot offend with argumentative post, plus I tend to exaggerate a little and it is me who tend to provoke :).
Don't know how profitable Karl is in real life trading,
my point was that in my experience constantly biased people tend to miss the biggest trading opportunities out there and… cause others to do the same.

  • elliott_surfs

It's possible that not too many people feel qualified to question your charts…save a few quality contributors.

include myself in the unqualified to question category but I still learn a tremendous amount.

lol, BJ your posts are in the top as well =p I wish I had time to analyze my own $hit and provide, but I spend the majority looking and sifting through every chart and article you guys post. Good morning,

the DAX gapped up at the open and is currently trading around today's pivot of 5856 even as its banks are selling off again. 1st resistance for today seen at 5879 2nd resistance at 5914 – 1st support is found at 5821.

Strongest sector in Europe this morning is the techs followed by healthcare, chemicals, utilities and telecoms. Weakest sector are the banks.

what about the macroeconomic number in germany, do you know anything about it, there was something today, ifo or something?

  • ultra

    Guten Morgen.

Correctly called bounce in all the dollar pairs last night but got stopped out just precisely before it went on its run. Not for the first time this week. Think I must be setting them too tight.

    Bah!

Think there is a fair chance it may continue – I can see cable accelerating out of its overnight up channel – AUD and EUR more sluggish though.

  • CorporalCarrot

Hah Ultra, I feel your pain big time. You remember the massive intraday reversals after the FOMC meeting back in September? I got stopped out of a Dow position approximately 1 minute before the top, and within 1 dow tick of the top that cost me nearly €60k when it plummeted.

Theres nothing worse in life than a stop set to perfection. So now I set stops where I think it can get to, then add on another bit just in case, in a zone where I know I will be feeling very uncomfortable about my analysis if it gets there.

Incidentally, looking at the big picture and world indices, I wonder if the FTSE will be the first to break down here. Slowly but surely the 50 ema has caught up with the FTSE, and its only had one close below this (which was quickly reversed) since July. I think a close beneath here could be very significant.

Jane, the Dax is obviously benefitting from Euro weakness in much the same way the US indices did earlier in the year. I am tempted to wonder if we are putting in a generational double top here though. I know we had a new higher high, but I don't know if we've put sufficiently convincing daylight between here and the mid October highs for it to be considered a breakout.

Jane, I wonder could you help me with something else. I am looking for data on what German nurses, teachers and police officers are paid; their salary scales and allowances and work conditions.

Could you help me to locate?

  • ultra

Yep, need to give a little more leeway I think.

Oddly for a brit, I don't really look at the FTSE much, but you're right – it is really up against it it seems

  • tradejane

    Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, the ifo (kind of like the US ISM Index) increased this month 0,2 points more than the expected 94,5.

Some info: the lowest it's ever been was in February 2009 at 82,6 – the highest was in December 2006 at 108,8.

  • Trader_Steve

    Hi Anna,

I wonder how they will feel when the capital gains taxes are doubled for profits taken in 2010?

  • tradejane

    Ouch. BTDT too.

    >Think there is a fair chance it may continue

Agreed. I also expect the $dji to revisit the 10500 area in the next few of days. I won't be too sad if it doesn't, though.

    To PRSGuitars – Zach

    Hi Zach,

Come Jan 1 I am going to get setup to look religiously at that 133 you have. I hope it has treated you well this year.

I saw Bryan Adams live last week and he was terrific on an acoustic with a piano player on some songs.

Shoot me an e-mail if you finally banned Tronconate. I've learned a bit more about that cretin and have no desire to be anywhere near his stench.

    Till then, happy trails,

I think you have to say that that fell in 3 waves, non? Shame you can't do fibs in stockcharts, but 1.04 looks like a reasonable target.

  • CorporalCarrot

    Thanks Jane.

  • ultra

Incidentally, on the DAX that looks very much it could be a diagonal fifth; terminal pattern with barest shade of a new high? I'd say that was just the teensiest bit bearish.

  • raised_by_wolves

Go back to bed. Sleep in. When you wake up, do as I've recommended before: Eat soup spiced with cayenne pepper, and eat yogurt or something else with Spirulina mixed in. Also, make a warm “beautiful” mixed drink.

Been looking at BPNDX:BPSPX as a complement to NDX:SPX for a while now and the correlation does swing around wildly, but seems to be a bit of a leading indicator at the moment and it doesn't forecast any bounce yet

  • http://gemstowear.etsy.com Jan

    point taken & I couldn't agree more!

  • CorporalCarrot

    Jane

Do you mind telling me how I read that? Take the teachers salary page for example, Berlin.

We have income (min); 1880, income (max) 2,200, wages 2,040, salary 2???

what do these figures mean. Are they monthly salaries (i.e. 1,880-2,200 presumably based on years experience)?

  • tradejane

The easiest way to read this would be to look at the right hand side where it says:

Durchschnittsgehalt Brutto Lohn (Average gross salary)

    &

Verdienst nach Wochenstunden (Earnings according to weekly hours worked)

Btw, I just realized, the link for teacher's salary is the wrong one, the right one is:

    http://www.gehaltsvergleich.com/gehalt/Lehrer-L

  • tradejane

Incidentally the DAX also covered a gap this morning. There's two more, the second being at 5700 area. :)

  • CorporalCarrot

But that average gross salary is a monthly figure correct?

And those figures are up to date?

  • http://sshamster.blogspot.com/ Stainless_Steel_Hamster

it did warn of the fal in spx:gold in august… yes, this was a drop, nit as we expected though

Always worth checking in on the Baltic Dry from time to time. After a nice spike there for a while (presumably increased shipping coming up to Xmas), its been steadily falling. One would expect this to rise substantially if a latent recovery ever takes shape.

not realy, it might bounce from yesterday, gerbil's upper Bollinger, or from 1.02 MA104, bb13,2.618 is currently at 1.04 but it's open air area

  • http://sshamster.blogspot.com/ Stainless_Steel_Hamster

hi steve, nice seeing you around (think I made it clear) but please don't do a f_aq and ask for bans to 3rd parties…

can't you just ignore those you dislike until you have a chance of breaking their kneecaps iin real life?

why can't we just… get along?

  • http://sshamster.blogspot.com/ Stainless_Steel_Hamster

I think it will be even worse, a trading tax, some 10's of BPs and it's over

  • tradejane

Yes, this is a monthly figure and they appear to be up-to-date. As you can see there are some big regional differences. People residing on the eastern part of Germany earn a lot less than those who reside on the west part.

  • ultra

You are right – was forgetting the bb – we are actually at the bb(20,2) and the trendline. Still, the overlap is there – not a classic five.

I think it is a poll and you have the min.wage, max, average and the number of polled teachers (that's why when you have just 1 on the last collumn all values match)

it could be the pretax and social security numbers or net (beats me)

the values take into account teachers level (from seniority and studies) and number of hours (part time, full time, + aditional tasks as school board)

    I think
