Intra-Day Update: Happy Halloween!

UPDATE 10:26am EDT: I don’t expect much excitement in the next few hours, seems we’re range bound as of now. The stars lined up very nicely for the bears this morning, but I presciently smelled a fake out and stayed out, which I’m very thankful for right now. Berk and I have been mostly in cash for a week now, and it’s getting boring – could have taken the week off or worked on my devious plans for market domination.

Watch the 1333 pivot on the NQ and the 9200 on the YM right now, if we breach those with confidence we might see some fireworks.

Anyway, while we watch the paint dry, here is this:

UPDATE 11:01am EDT: In the last few days I have come across two articles which opine that the smartest move for homeowners underwater might be to just walk away. Here’s one by Barry Ritholtz and one by Karl Denninger. I admire both of their work, and if I was sitting on a underwater mortgage right now (which I am not, since I am equipped with the rare ability to solve mathematical equations) then I would seriously consider doing this. Saving all those mortgages might be politically desirable but from an economic prospective a majority of the mortgages written after 2005 need to fail – they are not sustainable and I don’t know why anyone would want to pay $3k/month on a mortgage that’s worth $1k/month at best.

UPDATE 11:16am EDT: Those pivots I mentioned were just breached. Let’s see if we get a retest, but maybe we’ll see a bit of a rally now.

UPDATE 12:32pm EDT: Nothing much to report on either side – bull or bear. As expected, we’re just gyrating around today. Two notable events however: Light Sweet Crude is at 71 and Mr. VIX dropped below 60.

UPDATE 1:41pm EDT: I stepped out for a while and returned just to realize I had missed out on a nice rally. I’m seeing a few pivots overhead:

YM: 9400
NQ: 1356
ES: 983 – there’s also a 993 retracement level.

If we breach those we should rally hard, although at this very moment some of my other ‘mystery indicators’ are telling me that momentum is abating. This might change of course – seems the bulls are in full control at this point – I don’t see any significant selling pressure.

UPDATE 2:28pm EDT: We just put in a nice a,b,c and seem to be rallying higher – the probabilities for a drop are greatly diminished in my view. Assuming 972 holds it’s possible we see 983 or even higher before the close.

UPDATE 3:02pm EDT: Just wanted to let you guys know that the daily effective Fed Funds Rate today was 0.3%. It’s basically free money. Ponder on that over the weekend.

UPDATE 6:21pm EDT: Just got an email from ThinkOrSwim announcing the new version of the TOS desktop, which will be available tomorrow early morning. One salient feature will be the ability to export/import Prophet watchlists – something I have been clamoring for all year. THANK YOU TIM KNIGHT! This will allow us to share watchlists right here from our the EvilSpeculator blog. I’m even considering writing an export module that would produce a watchlist on the fly. Being a tech nerd and all, I’ll have to do some reverse engineering tomorrow once I get my meddling hands on an output – will keep you posted on what I find out ;-)

UPDATE Saturday 5:02pm EDT: Okay, I just checked and I won’t have to bother writing a TOS import module. What’s being exported/imported into Prophet charts is a simple CSV file (comma separated values). Actually there is a carriage return after each symbol just like this:

GOOG
BIDU
MA
CCJ

Stick this in a file but make sure you use a plain text editor. On the Mac I prefer Aquamacs Emacs since that one guarantees not to add any hidden characters like for instance Word would. On Windows you can either use the Notepad or any other text only editor (again, not M$ Word). Save it as filename.csv and you’re ready to import. Easy cheesy lemon squeeze.

another solid day of buying as the market is solidly moving up with conviction. these sell-offs are very orderly for the first time in months. It is clearly a sign that we will move up and continue to rally. recognize that the pattern of buying and selling is shifting to HIGHER equities gioing forward. do not stay paralyzed as thier is easy profits to be made right now!

  • BigHouse(Aka Mr Vix)

I'm out of my XOM put for a loss. I'm going to watch things out of habit, but I'm done for awhile whilst the market decides where it is going to go. What people don't know is that the huge trade deficit is mainly because of China not keeping their end of the bargain in the trade agreements. Letting us buy their products but they won't buy as much of ours. And controlling their currency against the $ all this time.
The trade deficit is into trillions: http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/balance/c57

They literally have tried all these years, albeit looking successfully, pulling the rug under us. It was the Clinton administration who opened international trade with China – they were “boycotted” internationally for trades before then due to their largely government sponsored human rights violations [which sadly still goes on].

So what do you think, with China's halt in production of goods lately, would it affect the US trade deficit positively or negatively? & how about the general effect on the U.S. economy?

  • http://www.evilspeculator.com berkshire

In my opinion, China slowing production won't help us any. Like you said, part of the problem was China not selling us the appropriate amount. However, why would we trade with them if they can't keep their end of the deal?

So, China cuts production, cost of good goes up, meaning we pay more for the shit we buy from them, and they will continue to not buy from us. Don't see it helping much. IMO.

Berk, prices are not going up. China is not cutting production they have a huge excess capacity. Probably more then we realize. This will put downward pressure on prices, as producers cut prices tand sell closer to margin cost. This is what happened in the dot com boonm to tech companies. Over capcity leads to deflation, not teh trillion thrown at this govt., that may be a game changer. But, we have not seen this yet.

  • molecool

Actually, folks are posting trades here all the time, and so do we. However, since most of our visitors are option traders this week has been quiet for us. When we did take trades we posted them immediately (Wednesday for instance when we banked some coin with puts). Unless you're trading spreads going long right while the VIX is so high is not very profitable. If we keep rallying from here and break certain resistance levels I will be happy to start grabbing calls again, but for now I'm happy where I am. The biggest profit potential in a bear market is the downside. Also, I've added over 30% to my portfolio in the last month, thus I don't mind sitting and waiting for the right time. I've been watching a lot of guys spinning like crazy and producing very little. Not everyone is T.K. who finally picked the perfect time after having gotten kicked out of the long side twice. He also is able to trade massive amounts of stock due to his rather large capital.

  • molecool

Same here – sitting and waiting while the market melts up.

Hey fellow Speculators. Do any of you have trading books that you feel are must reads? I think I may buy a few on Amazon.com this weekend to add to my library.
    Thanks,
    Toad

  • Ukla the Mokk

Yes, yes and yes. Even though I apparently have much to learn, the two most indespensible books I've read are:
Candlestick and Pivot Point Trading Triggers by John L Person; and
Trade Chart Patterns Like the Pros by Suri Dudella
Person's book is available at Amazon.com and I highly recommend buying it used since it comes with a CD that is absolutely worthless and adds considerably to the price of the book new.
Dudella's book is AWESOME because it is zero theory and page after page after page of candlestick patterns and how to trade them. I get SO sick of authors/traders who write a book and the book is 95% theory and 5% (if you're lucky) on how to trade, how to manage risk, ways to “repair” a trade, etc. In fact, I've used Dudella's book so much, I may have to order another before too long as I'm wearing out the binder. By the way, Dudella's book is only available at his website (http://www.surinotes.com). It's a cheezy sounding title, but the book is WELL worth the price.
Hope this helps. These two books have enlightened me more than any (or all) other books I've read…and I've read a lot.
    Best of luck!

  • http://z-stock.blogspot.com/ zstock

I don't know what your background and style are, but trading is a part time gig for me (I still pay the bills with my day job). I'm still learning and would love to get to a point where I could trade full time. Anyway, I recommend the following:

Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom by Van Tharp – great explanations of risk management, position sizing, and calculating a R multiple (not as complicated as it sounds) for each trade.

Market Wizards by Jack Schwager – series of interviews with top traders. Very Interesting to read about their different styles and backgrounds.

Way of the Turtle by Curtis Faith – describes methods used by the Turtle Traders

How to Make Money in Stocks by William J. ONeill – More for growth investing as opposed to trading. I subscribe to IBD too.

Perhaps our hosts could add a recommended reading list? Thanks

Happy Halloween to all the evildoers out there. I was gonna name names of those of you who have really helped me learn a thing or two, but will refrain. I will, of course, give buku props to berkshire and molecool. While I did manage to bungle a big chunk of my profits this month, I still am up quite nicely…especially when you consider that all my friends who trade iron condors and calendars (what I was doing, but since reverted to my true calling of long options) are all down for Oct…some of them out so hard that they closed everything by the end of the first week in Oct at a 25% loss on their accounts! So that I'm up makes me feel good. Especially when you take another consideration that this is my first month trading long options. This is truly where it's at, and I owe whatever success I've made for myself to this blog and those who inhabit it. I aim to steel my discipline and sharpen my skills this next month, and I hope we all continue to help each other in that endeavor.
Cheers to you all…looking forward to November!

Yeah, thanks Ukla. I just bought Dudella's book.

  • Ukla the Mokk

You won't regret it. Let me throw this out at you though. I started to wonder about this book when I read it and got into some of the beginning chapters like symmetry patterns, market fractals, and harmonic patterns and things like that. There are some other things he goes into. As you will see, this dude definitely puts the “technical” in technical analysis. If you start to think it's too much or over your head, no worries. Just keep reading. This book is gold in my opinion. I basically highlighted all the main “how to” one-liners for most of the patterns and strategies. Like I said, I refer to it a lot and you will be a smarter and better trader almost certainly because of it. I don't wanna overdo my praise, but it is money well spent.

  • jcoors

My first uploaded graph :) http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=200810

Seems like we're ready to push decisively one way or the other. Declining volume suggests to me that the direction will be downwards, but the election is on Tuesday, so maybe the market won't move much. Anyone reading it differently?

  • Ukla the Mokk

Here are my thoughts. We were in such oversold territory that the rally would begin whenever the bulls felt ready to test the waters, which was basically the beginning of this week for whatever reason. Now that we've advanced, I think a slight pullback is in order. Me personally, rather than vote for myself for president (thanks for that touch of class, mole ;) ), I feel that if Obama is elected, we're going to see more selling. Thats just MY opinion, I could be wrong. Regardless, the elections may spook the market regardless. I'm apt to believe that regardless of who is elected, the markets will not “do nothing” as most have voted. If we pullback Monday and Tuesday and the candidate that “the market” feels is right is elected, I think we'll see a monster rally. Otherwise, I think we'll see some downside that will peter out and we begin upward movement for at least the intermediate term until the week(s) prior to the “change of command.”
As Dennis Miller would say, “That's just my opinion…I could be wrong.”

Minion, I think the signal to noise ratio ( i like that as a description) can be better. Have you seen Berkshire trade? He's as good as they get, but I'm getting a lot of signal to noise on his main disqus page. I need less to zero help with Indexes ( this blog is way concentrated on that for some reason) and I need more to much more help with individual stock picks.

    hi,
2 mth old newbie trader and been mostly lurking trying to learn from you guys.
Just wanted to say it's been an eye-opening experience trying to keep up with you all
    and thanks for sharing.

Question on TOS/Prophet: You mentioned there was an import watchlist module/feature.
Right clicking on a watchlist only shows: rename, create, delete, export. How do you get to
    import?

    Thanks!

  • molecool

Welcome – the more the merrier.

The import feature is under the 'Watch Lists' menu on top. Voila!

  • vinctrade

Ah!! Wonderful! Thanks Mole. I've been bugging TOS CS myself about this feature. :)
