Hell Just Froze Over

by The MoleMay 19, 2009

11:16am EDT: Damn, I never thought I would say this but here’s a Fox News clip I would like you guys to see:

Damn, hell just froze over… Great clip and it’s kind of strange to find that level of truthiness on Fox News of all places (and no, I’m no sandal wearing granola chugging lefty – more in the center).

1:00pm EDT: The tape in equities looks completely psychotic today and I have better things to do than watch this crap. All we are getting are swings off the respective VWAP marks. I don’t see any real selling – downside pressure has completely evaporated. The daily RLs on both ends are miles away and I have no opinion on which way this will swing. I’m back in cash and probably will remain so for the next few days. I barely managed to pull into green for the day with some lucky/creative futures swing trading and have no intent to take on any further risk.

Psychologically, this is an interesting point in the tape – we’ve had wild swings in both direction and each camp is waiting for an opportunity to ‘kill it’ as a break (up or down – depending who you ask) is expected to be imminent – just the kind of tape that can go sideways for a while. But I took a step back and looked at where we are right now – and I have to tell you the odds are lousy and I’m not going to try to force it. Anyone who looks at this tape and sees good odds is either insane or deeply engaged in wishful thinking.

1:25pm EDT: I am the third revelation!

This one is for Tim ๐Ÿ˜‰

I am a long term Bear .. but when I see on a TV show all the folks unanimous about this being nothing but a Bear Market Rally .. i start to get paranoรd !!!

VTI Total Market Vipers looks easy enough to read…

IMHO, should we be fortunate enough to see 918 cash today – short the crap out of this market. Turnaround Tuesday. My minimum expectation is 830 next stop.

  • alphahorn

Long FAS @ 10.27, also two little stocks that I think will breakout soon, i've been playing a lot of these types of stocks over the past 3 weeks. but check out ICO and PCX, two coal companies with nice bull flags and nice b/o potential

  • http://stainlesssteelchicken.blogspot.com/ StainlessSteelChicken

Exactly, we need all these shows to quit talking about a “bear market rally” and start talking about a new secular bull. It's ironic that we need less talk about reality and more talk about delusion in order for reality to set in. :)

  • Fujisan

    Mole,

I looked at your question about GLD. Here are my thoughts:

If your GLD view is a range bound, and you are expecting GLD to expire right around 88, BF would be a good strategy, but this particular BF's legs are much narrower and you could be out of money pretty easily – so I would probably go with wider legs (like 93/88/83) – but of course this would be more expensive – so it's up to you how much you like to invest in this position.

If your your view is bearish and you like to hold on to your bearish position longer, 88/90 diagonal may not be a bad idea – you would have July puts after June puts expires – but of course, this would be more expensive, but better probability.

Or you could simply go with 93/88 bear put spread.

    Hope this helps.

  • BalaB

hmmm……The market look like it wanted to take profits for the past 30mins but the falling USD (IMO) just isn't gonna let it.
I'd like to say I'm 'long and strong' but perhaps “I'm long and with a semi' is a better analogy

I couldn't agree more, those were my exact thoughts as I watched that clip.

  • standard_and_poor

PCX on a breakout is extremely bullish, a cup with handle formation. Good find for long term hold!

  • Gordon_Gekko

Yeah, but when the hell will they stop calling it a bear market rally? 1500?

  • http://stainlesssteelchicken.blogspot.com/ StainlessSteelChicken

Sometimes it's hard to keep things in proper context. Thes blogs are but a microcosm frequented by nutjobs such as myself (I won't speak for the rest of you clowns). Probably 8 out of 10 people think I am freakin nuts when I tell them this rally has been a gift for their buy and hold arse and they should start scaling out. I still think the airwaves are dominated by green shootistas

    Just a FYI…

    http://www.raymondjames.com/inv_strat.htm

Nevertheless, last week felt like a trend change to me with the S&P 500 (equal weighted) losing more than 8%, the Russell 2000 surrendering some 7%, and the D-J Transports shedding nearly 9%. Moreover, Thursday was a 90% Downside Day. As the Lowryโ€™s service notes, โ€œA likely key factor in determining the extent of a market pullback in the weeks ahead would be the occurrence of additional 90% Down Days. Thus far, in the rally since mid March, 90% Down Days have been isolated events, quickly followed by a renewed uptrend. However, a series of 90% Down Days could indicate the sort of sustained, heavy selling consistent with a deeper and more sustained market set back.โ€ And, as the always insightful Helene Meisler writes, โ€œKeep your eyes on the Russell 2000 since it is the only index that has rallied back to the underside (or just about) of its broken channel line. A failure here would confirm my view that weโ€™re in the midst of a correction.โ€

I have had 915 on the SPX drawn as my line in the sand for closing shorts and that's the game plan I am sticking with. We touched it today and back down and is trying at it again here. If we break above which looks like a good chance it will I will move to the sidelines and let the bulls have their fun.

When they stop doing that, that's when to aggressively get short.

Despite how ridiculous this rally this, I'm starting to root for it to push higher. Shake out all the bears (bear capitulation) and get dumb money confidence to the extreme. That's a great time to go short.

  • Fujisan

Oh, I see. That's nice to know. With me and Anna, we could get rid of all the tolls!

  • anotherone

I've been studying the rule book (Elliot Wave Principle) and think I know enough to have an opinion. So I'll put it out there for you guys to take shots at.

The big picture is that we've been correcting since Cycle V ended in 2000. The first corrective wave down, Cycle a, ended in 2002. The reaction wave, Cycle b, peaked out Oct of 2007. We're now completing the final corrective wave down, Cycle c. So far, Cycle c has developed as a 5 wave and we completed Intermediate {1} at the low of 666 in March for a drop of 911. We're now working on Intermediate {2}, which is a counter-trend corrective wave, in this case a bullish wave. The question is, how far will {2} retrace before {3} starts?

As Mole has said (http://evilspeculator.com/?p=7135), we've not been in {2} for long enough to be looking for {3} to start. And we've only retraced a little more than the 23.6% Fib retracement. So the odds are that we'll see more upside for the rest of the summer. A possible target is the 38% level at 1013.

The problem we have, is that we're too smart (and good looking :)). We look at the state of the economy in general, market internals, the condition of the big banks and we KNOW that the market has to tank. That's why we're bears. But, the general public only sees that the market has crashed and staged a remarkable comeback and they just want to get back to the party and they don't want to miss out on a move up, so they buy. The big boys playing their games use that sentiment to push the tape higher than it has any reason to go and the cumulative affect is an Intermediate corrective wave {2} that squeezes us bears because our greed makes us jump in early so we don't miss the big crash.

With all that in mind, my gameplan is to not try to profit from the short-term bearish moves for the next couple of months. Instead, I'm going to try to scale into positions that will turn a profit as {2} completes. As we approach 1000, shorten my timeframes on the bullish positions while starting to build a mega bearish position.

*************** FREE TRADES on triple ETF pairs… ***********************
    Nice rodents of evil.

Cunning people at direxion has launched a 4 ETFs they are all triple.
TYD, TYO, TMF, TMV… These are all triple 10 and 30yr T-bonds etfs….

from example of FAS and FAZ as a pair…
    which started at 50 + 50 = 100 $ and now it is at 14.94 $

by basic fine print of these ETF a pair of these shall only loose value in long term….
So please feel free to short a pair…

Do modest trades as in between fluxes can wipe your margin…
So keep it small and sweet…

Basically short all 4 of them in moderation and only trade on short side….
Never long this… as Tim what happens to you when you long FAZ….

    Best of luck and enjoy.

Concise thinking that I agree with. The psych term is cognitive dissonance for what we experience and it is one of the hardest to overcome. Our behaviors have to be dissonant with our thoughts and knowledge. Plato's allegory of the cave always comes to my mind. Most see the shadows on the cave wall from the dancers, but we see the dancers, and some see that we are in a cave.

  • callie

Just got back from dinner (7.30 pm here in Amsterdam) and watched the clip. Feeling mighty cheerful. LOL. My dinnerpartner and I have come to the conclusion that:
    (1) There are no more bulls and bears only MMโ€™s.
    (2) This bearmarket-rally is completely artificially driven, and superbly choreographed by porsche driving sociopaths, with cheap money donated by the taxpayers, courtesy of the Fed/US government, who will let โ€˜m keep their profits but bail โ€˜m out when their excessive risktaking goes wrong.
    (3) All this green shoots-spin is total crap. The german economy, just to mention one example, contracted 5% the last 3 months, if it goes on GDP will contract 20% in 2009.
    But:
    (4) Thereโ€™s gotta be a bubble somewhere, otherwise our dear MMโ€™s wonโ€™t make money. We can analyse the hell out of everything but this market wonโ€™t go down untill itโ€™s in their advantage.
    (5) Iโ€™ve now been officially been diagnosed as suffering from overinformation/overanalysing-disorder and chartporn-addiction.
    So:
    (6) Itโ€™s time to take a break.

watching the SPY 10m sticks… they have been trying 3 times to bust out the top.. ( with avengence, without much luck…

So, a 3 mountain top possible… really a longer term pattern but I would take it…. of course toss in a nice big black cloud for confirmation..

all I can do is watch to see how patterns develope

  • http://snpmonster.blogspot.com/ SnPMonster

There are still some gems out there, but you gotta look hard….For example AMZN…..

I recommend this stock for daytrading tomorrow..

  • Osso

Also watching HUI if it gets to 358.61…the May 13th. high.

Is yours one of those expensive TVs.. Call me before you throw it out.. I will be outside to catch it :-)

  • MyLifeMyTrade

    long or short AMZN

  • CowardlyLion

Well, there have been a lot of Cramer signs indicative of a top in the last 8 weeks that haven't come thru.

But on the subject of funds buying in, http://tinyurl.com/oxs4gw

    Not so much.

  • Keirsten

Indeed Osso. And if you draw a TL from the swing high in Dec. on up, that almost perfectly matches that high from Sept. Nice point of resistance right here. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • http://snpmonster.blogspot.com/ SnPMonster

Bias is long, but if you are afraid that this is a wave B…..Then don;t hold overnight

  • Osso

not if we dont breach 916.

  • tranchefoot

    good call!

  • Count_de_Monee

OK, since it's a slow day and Mole wants the post count up a bit, I'll repost something I wrote yesterday in response to Katzo's lament to get a discussion going. Only BS was kind enough to chime in even though I think the debate is an interesting one for the current times.

“I know. I agree with you and am curious what others think. Is TA really useless like many investors seem to believe?
I mean, sure it may work in a “normal” market, but when you have this drain of liquidity and overt government intervention? I thought of an analogy for the more tech oriented rats. Imagine the market is like one big network of computers, and GS and a few others have administrator accounts while we retail only have guest privileges. To top it all off, the government controls the kernel (kind of like the brain of the operating system) so it pretty much can have the network do whatever it wants, regardless of us little nodes. So TA kind of becomes useless in this analogy as the hubs control the network and they're fully backed by the operating system. In this scenario, the charts will paint whatever they decide, thus rendering them obsolete.”

  • eunsuh

its a crappy 12 inch with a video player. I have nothing nice in my general area of trading.

  • anthem

woohoo, GS is inching closer to that red line.. . C'mon just a bit more. . . .

  • itsgold

going to take a gamble and hold my puts until the end of the day. After looking at today's chart, it's obviously a consolidation day. Lots of choppiness – up and down in a channel. Look at the 1 minute chart on the SPY for reference.

  • Osso

    LDK,STP…on fire into earnings……on thursday..

  • tranchefoot

well, yeah. this is an historical market. In the future, you will be calibrating your models to what happened in this market. Data determine the model, not the other way around.

    OK, I am back.
I am looking at the day SPX chart, all indicator are screaming to me that this sucker is going to explode higher, maybe 4-800 points. A huge move. Unprecedented. Rocket out of control!
    OK, how to play this?
HOW TO PLAY THIS-SHORT THE FUCK OUT OF THIS MARKET. ROTFLMAO

    This is a joke everyone.

  • Count_de_Monee

True, but his uber bullishness has gotten to ridiculous levels lately, calling sellers stupid, blaming bad news on stupid media, saying anyone who doesn't share his view doesn't get it, banks are a great buy right here, etc, etc.

It just seems we've hit an extreme on the Cramer-I'm-Cuckoo-for-Cocoa-Puffs indicator.

  • DoubleNaughtSpy

The problem is that there is no UPS/surge protector (control of the FED) installed in this scenario and when the power (FED) fails, the whole system is going to power down.

  • GoCougs

Osso, what do you mean $14.74? Seems like $34.50 is currently the battle line for the day.

  • 1981er

    Re: UNG

I saw a comment earlier about buying UNG. Anyone know if the following is true (taken from TF)?

“1.) UNG is a publicly traded partnership and you will receive a K-1, meaning you will pay taxes on your share of their revenue. Typically these types of funds will pay distributions, so no big deal right? This fund for some reason does not pay distributions, so you basically will pay taxes on 1256 contract income while not receiving a penny… in addition to any ordinary cap gains taxes that you will be required to pay.”

BalaB & Anna, follow you folks and others here great traders, much to learn .It seems you have forgot we are in Mercury retrograde and everything goes haywire and backwards, this will end at the end of month, be patient and try to avoid the stress it is in the stars, as far as TOS I have been with ameritrade for years and there takeover of TOS is going to ruin the platform, I won't even use a ameritrade platform just there free streaming data on Quote tracker and going to try Ninja now they added AMTD. Avoid those computer repair and other broken things for a week and watch how easily they resolve after the 30th, never believed in this stuff but enough smacks in the face and you start to believe, look how many have posted about order entry errors disqus issues etc and this crazy tape you just got to blame it on something so I blame Mecury Retrograde google it and you will freak at the descriptions and how things are actually happening, answer have a toke and relax Aloha

  • Squidman

Count, I've been trading only full time since July of last year. I would really like to make it a year as successful, but I have to say that lately I've not been making the TA work like I was. All I can say is that a number of very experienced traders I know quit this market and keep telling me they would not know how to trade it. So I've got to ask myself, what the fuck am I doing here? I'll let you know when I have an answer. For now I stubbornly persist in believing it or I will start working again.

  • salvadorveiga

I don't know if you guys know this site, but they're very good.

Although they use economic analysis they've been pretty much right, calling crash in October/september back in January 2008.

    http://www.leap2020.eu/GEAB-N-35-is-available!-

In old issues they were calling for a UK and USA default somewhere during the summer…

They make an analogy to the Matrix, much like the movie this will be “Crisis Reloaded”

  • innatedc

So what does mother mercury say about the S&P for the next 2 weeks….

  • Fujisan

I'm sooooo tempted to go short right here, right now. But Qs is alredy at 78.6% retracement level, it might as well go up all the way to last Thurs high.

  • springheel_jack

Well, 4 to 800 points higher is a big range. If it goes up then I think it will end up in there somewhere. lol

Joking apart this looks like a sideways consolidation day resetting overbought stochastics. I'm leaning towards a break up from here up to 930.

  • Osso

will add more SDS on any mkt. push up…….

  • standard_and_poor

    Mercury retrograde, I'll research.

  • Fujisan

I kind of believe what you say. There were a couple of times that I was trading FX right in the middle of a major combust day (at night) and all the FX platforms went down, including TOS and FXCM, and I personally had to call in the help desk in order to execute the trade. The tapes were totally out of control.

Intraday range on the Dow is way too small. I can see the MM's parking the Dow 60-70pts down unless they squeeze a bit more downside and pop it up to the rally highs for the close.

Looks more like a close at the HoD though.

Playing a longer term swing. Last leg up went to 930ish, this one went to 915(?), I'm expecting the weekly trend to start acting like the 800lb gorilla it is and squash this “rally” starting 9:30 am tomorrow. We finish red this week (at least that's what the big picture trend is telling me).

Folks, myself included have been saying that no sort of TA is working… Look at the charts for IWM (top right) and QQQQ (top left) in the grid below

    http://www.screencast.com/users/mylifemytrade/f

Both of them have sported a near perfect 23.6% fib retracement before starting to move up… IMO, there is lot more upside to come and that move down last week is all the correction we get…

IMO the quick move down is to gather fuel for a jam up into close

  • katzo7

That looks like a decisive long hard going down candle on the 3 min.

  • springheel_jack

I'd like to see the SPX rise to the 200 day SMA tomorrow at just over 930 and close near it. That should put the Dow over 8574.65, and unless the transports have a really amazing day, and provided that equities turn back down from there, that will provide a very nice Dow Theory Sell Signal.
With a smallish rally to the close, that could happen today as the Dow is currently at 8513.
SPX daily stochastics suggest an up day tomorrow, but should reach the overbought line if we do have one. That would provide a nice technical level to short from.
If we clear 950 though, I'm turning bull for a while. Thin pickings on the bear side recently.

  • http://snpmonster.blogspot.com/ SnPMonster

It is working, just that it is correcting any overbought conditions by going sideways.

If the chart says fall it will probably rally and vice versus it all goes backwards and crazy, posted a couple of links for Anna check it out, look at this close we where breaking above 915 normally that would get some action but not now, watch the vix play havoc next back to mid 30's by eom probably.
On a personal note Katzo7 you are a great trader to follow and your humor is top shelf

    Stomping out the green shoots…

    http://screencast.com/we455rg555?ggrg4

m not an economist (obviously). The low # was good because less starts will let them work

off the oversupply/overhang of the existing inventory, which many believe is understated

because the banks are not fully reporting the foreclosure situation. This all depends on if

someone will actually buy a house, because prices have not stopped going down. If this #

came out 3-4 years ago maybe things would be a little different today.

  • ZigZag

Sounds good Keirsten, I'm doing the same. Interesting that the 5 DMA cross was right at our friends date and he's still saying the DOW will be lower for the week. I couldn't take it anymore and went ahead and bought a subscription to his site a while back. :-)

  • katzo7

Thnx BigIslandLife. That makes me feel good.

ACTUALLY THAT WAS A JOKE AND MY INDICATORS ARE ALL TURNING DOWN. That is the
good news. The bad news is that they have been really screwy lately, no
    follow through.

  • standard_and_poor

Think of it this way: numerically your loyal audience will remain the same but converted to a captive audience with less
interuptions (you know market chatter).ย  How nice for you and your comedy troupe, huh?ย

Well, i dunno S&P, sounds good in theory but it is like charting these past days. When theory outstrips practie, look out.

  • springheel_jack

    Hi katzo7,

Yes I know. I was joking too.

My indicators all indicate short-term trouble ahead, tailing off badly in
the medium-term & culminating in disaster further down the line.

Looking at the futures, it looks like my Dow Theory Sell Signal might well
be triggered today. I think it would be invalidated if the Transports
confirm within a few days though, so if we see the S&P hit 950, I suspect
that the sell signal will be toast.
By that stage I suspect it will be time to turn bull for a bit in any case
for the next upleg in this delusional rally.
