Your Tax Dollars At Work

by The MoleFebruary 25, 2009

Here’s a public service announcement. This is how much you personally are donating to rich banksters:

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside – I just couldn’t stand the thought of wealthy CEOs and Wall Street millionaires flying coach. Have got to do my part. Give me a second while I find that extra large bottle of lubricant I bought just for the occasion.

Now seriously, if those guys think that I’ll be paying my tax Dollars to bail out those corrupt bastards they’ve got another thing coming. Give it two years max and I’m going to be operating out of a country that commits their citizen’s tax contributions to more worthy causes – like for example: education, health care, science, infrastructure, retirement, social services, you get my drift. Something that actually supports and maybe even raises the living standard of all paying participants in the years to come. Not to pay for the slip ups and outright fraud committed by sleazy con artists in expensive suits posing as financial experts.

This country is broken and the pirates are running off with the loot. For some reason we are running after them begging to take our last pennies and then to throw us off a cliff.

I think I’m going to be sick.

UPDATE 12:04am EST: Read and weep: 4th quarter 2009 โ€“ Beginning of Phase 5 of the global systemic crisis: phase of global geopolitical dislocation.

Not only that, but 50% of the population pays no taxes at all. Some even get taxes paid to them.

Very good post Mole. My sentiments exactly with the exception that I am looking at 2-3 months for the exit but then have been on this mission for past 6 months. These assorted fruits and nuts in our gubmint are making me sick!

I know – it is sad. But I won't be one of the lambs being led to the slaughter – sorry.

  • Blind_Squirrel

Wouldn't that screw the elliott count??

  • alphahorn

if we ever made the top of the broader channel, i believe it would take considerably more time than the channel accounts for, the last trip ut lasted from Jan. 15 to Feb 9. i don't think we have that much time this time around. But I think a number of bears have been caught up in the euphoria of the Promised Land, and we may just have a bit more time to wander in the desert.

Hey, I posted this in the other thread, but with the new blog popping up, I guess that'll just get passed over. Anyways, I'm new and looking to learn and practice trading and learn more about zero in particular. If I was using a mock portfolio system (say, investopedia's simulator for example), what would i look up to find an S&P future's contract? I know I sound like an idiot, but I'm new and trying to get my feet wet.

    Thanks.

  • Hmm

    Mole,

IMO, Europe is in the same boat or worse. Their debt to GDP ratios are worse. Their banks did the same dumb, greedy things our banks did and their leaders are bailing them out also. The problem, is that they lent to Eastern Europe and they were more leveraged (the PIGS are way in over their head). In fact, there is a chance that in 1-2 years, the Euro will break up. All the Europeans want Germany to shoulder the cost of keeping the Euro together. Germany will continue to do that for some time but soon, with their export economy crashing, they will say no.

    Where can someone go?

  • Blind_Squirrel
  • Chop it up

Its time for (peaceful) civil disobedience. The kind that cannot be missed – like a National Debt payment strike or have everyone file their taxes on time but NOT pay the bill. They have no clue as to the level of outrage that is lurking below the surface.

Thought Obama might be different (great orator) but he has appointed the same fuckers that got us into the mess in the first place. I feel like I live in “Stepford” and just realized that everyone has the mark. Its really really hard not be totally cynical – I hate cynics, and yet as I read about what is happening I am becoming a cynic. Fuck!
Thanks for relighting my fire Mole!

Check out this chart I just pulled up. I had drawn a wedge channel a LONG time ago (several months) and I just realize we retested the broken support line and failed. That same trend line (yellow) provided some resistance as we sliced through it in the recent parallel channel.

    Short term view:

    Just something to think about….

  • TomOfTheNorth

Rod Serling (no “T” in the last name) was host of the TV Show “Night Gallery” in the 70's and host of the legendary “The Twilight Zone” in the 60s. Now that I think of it, sounds like your buddy was in his own personal Twilight Zone….

  • Peasant

I've been thinking the same for a while now. It's time to get the fuck out of Dodge.

Why pay income taxes, property taxes, etc. to fund the likes of tMerrill Lynch bonuses, unemployed women with 14 kids, etc. And don't forget about the baby boomers approaching retirement with less than half of their retirement funds. This country has a HUGE amount of unfunded debt obligations that will have to be paid by Gen X and Gen Y.

Two hedge fund managers that I pay attention to are George Soros and Jim Rogers. Jim Rogers predicted this mess long before the likes of Roubini and others. He saw this coming several years ago and sold his Manhattan digs and moved to Singapore. Good for him. I wish I had the same coin to follow in his footsteps.

Fuck the republicans and the democrats. I'd love to see Phil Gramm, Alan Greenspan, Hank Paulson, Bush, Thain, the 700 Merrill Lynch employees that received million dollar bonuses last year (funded by taxpayers), Clinton, Pelosi, all the assholes at AIG, and a host of others stripped of their citizenship and shipped off to a nice tropical locale like Somalia.

The family owner of the firm I work for has a networth that increases 2 mil per day…and no it's not the Waltons. And yet they are laying off people in the USA and replacing them with folks in India just so they can get their profit margin from 28% to 32%.

And yet, everyday there is some asshole on CNBC touting how cheap stocks are or some govt official that says we'll have a recovery in the 2nd half of '09. The biggest crutch of a service economy is its dependence on confidence and sentiment and there ain't a whole lot of that going on right now.

  • katzo7

Anyone hear anything about this? Picked it off of Gary's blog.

    Pure rumor?

  • TomOfTheNorth

I don't know if any of you follow what's happening in the legacy world of structured finance – the ABX index is something I used as a predictive tool way back when ('07 lol) – and more lately I check in once a week or so to see if there's been any material change. The lower grade credits (single A, triple B) have been holding at 'bottom of the chart support' for some time now, but the trip A have been holding up ok (albeiit down 50- 60%) after the initial plunge that bottomed in Nov. Not anymore. A sudden material breakdown in the better credits has hit the market in just the last two days. Take a look and share your thoughts:

If you're serious, it doesn't take that much money to relocate overseas, and there are some countries that are very affordable once you get there (and offer jobs for English speakers). Tom makes a good point – you have to be wary about accepting things at face value. A good deal of the information on some of these sites is pure advertising – especially real estate. But there are also forums and reader contributions that can be very helpful. For example, Dave's ESL Cafe has forums for discussion. Here's one on Korean jobs: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/index.php.

Rumor – CNBC flogs the rant every single day. Consider they did nothing to Gasparino <shudder> for dropping the F-Bomb on air recently. As far as GeoMay22's link to the CME press release, it likely signifies the Exchange received an Administration complaint. Prior to being a public company, the CME would not have reacted at all – it's great publicity – but as a public Company AND a regulated entity (AND in this new legislative environment) they need to play the game. I wouldn't be surprised to see CME AND CNBC be corporate level sponsors of The Chicago Tea Party

  • molecool

Yes I know that – not saying that I'll go back to Germany – you are misreading my comment. What I'm saying is that I can take actions that many Americans can't For instance – if i want to go to Cuba tomorrow I can. I can also set up shop in the outskirts of the EU where land and resources are cheap, especially when you are financially solvent.

  • TomOfTheNorth

Jokes aside for a moment, your topic is something I've devoted considerable thought to and, in a roundabout way, how I ended up in northern MN (from Chicago). Frankly there aren't many places 'better' than the US. Better in quotes as it's obviously subjective but generally I'm referring to an area's (a region's, a state's, a country's) inate ability to cope with what I like to refer to as FLAMING METEORS FROM OUTER SPACE, more recently popularized as Black Swan events. So if you can get past the weather, North Dakota is also a pretty solid sanctuary. Other countries I might consider would be Canada and New Zealand. Not however Britain & Europe as they are in for some heavy-duty civil strife. Antartica is out as iit doesn't have a Starbuck's yet. And if you persist in pining for Asia, spend a little quality time browsing the CDC website looking up tropical parasites or, my personal favorite,, avian flu. That will apply to Africa & South America too. lol

NORTHERN Minnesota? I live 10 miles from the MN border (Iowa) and think I live in the tundra.

I, too, have been thinking along the same lines and have decided that unless drug-addled crazies and Argentina-like military thugs start roaming the countryside, I'm better off here. We'll see.

My husband and I lived for a few years in Brazil and got to travel some in South America. Unless you have plenty of money – and sometimes even if you do – there are plenty of challenges to be found in many ther countries. And now I have grandchildren, so seems I need to stay put and try to make this a decent place for them to grow up in.

I think Canada could be a good possibility, don't know much about New Zealand. Can't get too excited about Asia…probably my lack on exposure to the culture.
A friend's brother and wife have lived in Lake Chapala, Mexico for 5 years and love it. Large Canadian and U.S. expat community, wonderful climate, economical cost of living, great medical care. They feel perfectly safe.
I have at least mentally packed my bags, but for now am staying put.

btw…I miss Nick. But I'm really hoping that you make so much money that the Sumo wrestler explodes and we can get some svelte avatar that's a little easier on the eyes.

  • instantkarmagonnagetya

that will happen soon. The reason that prohibition end was that during the depression, the govt realized that they were missing sorely needed taxes that could come from taxing alcohol rather than outlawing it. CA is so tolerant right now that think they will be one of the first to legalize and collect tax. One downside for the govt is that once more people start to smoke pot and once it is not so taboo, more people will become dissatisfied at the current conditions and will want change. Pot makes it much easier to see thru the propaganda and just might have that affect on the masses. Who knows?

California is it's own bankrupt country! The 5th largest in the world. I won't be getting my tax refund check for a while.

I suggest we stop paying fed income tax. For starters it was a tax levied on corporations, not people. How that system changed is beyond me. With its 4million rules or whatever it is, it's disgusting. None of us have to pay for any of this. There's not enough space in prison as it is. Poor Wesley Snipes. He knew that paying income tax is not lawful, and they turned him into an example. People have fought having to pay income tax and won. What is even worse is we pay more than corporate America! How the fuck did that happen? The tax was intended for corporate America and now the citizen pays more than the corporation. It's FUBAR to the Nth Degree.

  • TomOfTheNorth

LOL – that's just my winter insulation you're seeing – it get's chilly up here. Re: drug-addled crazies & thugs, My comments reflect my sense that most other places are inherently closer to the edge than we are. Your acquaintances in Mexico may feel decidedly less cozy if the recent surge in drug gang violence were to spill into their area – violence sufficient to prompt a State Dept Travel Advisory last week ( http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_… ) . I've seen some post a preference for an island – when I think island, I think hurricane, tsunami and, depending on the island, nowhere to run if something internal were to bust loose. Obviously these are extremes but that is the idea Taleb had in penning his Black Swan book – you need to consider the occurence of extreme events as probable -at some point. Barton Biggs is another one who has come to this worldview in the last few years. Who knows? I just know I'm a lot more relaxed since I got out of Chicago in '99 – but I still love to visit!

Does anyone read the website Of Two Minds?

It's written by a very intelligent and unique economist / philosopher, and I believe that people like Mole and others on ES would agree with at least some of his analysis and predictions on where the global economy is headed. Here is a link to a very interesting article he recently posted:

He almost looks smug – I don't know if it's appropriate to characterize his demeanor as confident, unduly overconfident or effing crazy!. Bernanke was looking unusually confident the last two days as well. Based on my take on the economy, I'm going with it's a contrived, concerted effort to ease market fear. Also, maybe it was nothing but it sure looked to me like Obama ignored Geithner on the dias this afternoon, afterwhich Obama bolted with an uncharacteristic “C-YA!”

I personally love the short Yen trade. True, now is probably not the best entry point for long tho, but I'm waiting for slight pull back to reload puts. Japan's as sick as any economy out there being primary exporter of higher tech electronics likely to be hit hardest by secular trend in weakening consumer demand. Japan Safe Haven my ass!

Additionally the unwind of the Carry Trade amplified Japan's problems with soaring exchange rate. Now as Japan's stark realities are starting to be understood and the pendulum swing the other way. Charts confirming this thesis with ES Yen decoupling. On top of it, Yen puts could act as a partial hedge to other short positions…

Thanks for the response. Very good points. One must consider both the macroeconomic and technical setups when trading currencies. Other than gold (if you consider it a currency) and the US $ relationship, I haven't explored much in this area. A lot to learn.

Hmmmm…ok the last link you posted scared me a bit. I'm known as the most bearish and pessimistic long-term person among my friends, but even I didn't guess a dollar collapse until 2011 at the earliest.

I just finished a comedic thriller about America's dollar collapsing: Liberation: Being the Adventures of the Slick Six After the Collapse of the United States of America. It's a bit scary to think of scenes from the book playing out in the very near future.

There are some brilliant people/traders on this board. Assume a dollar collapse by end of 2009. What are your guys' plans/ideas for the future?

“Read it and Weep” indeed. The thought of the USD collapse “that will never happen” gets worse every time I think about it. Such a crisis will certainly usher in WWIII because the fog of war will cloak the causes and culprits of this collapse. Crisis of this magnitude have always played out that way and this one will be the mother of them all. It was fun while it lasted.

I don't think Mexico shouold even be considered. The corruption there is at all levels and the drug cartels have become extremely powerful, taking over from the colombian cartels, and are now challenging the government for power. The latest assement is that Mexico is bordering as a failed state, Lawless country similar to Lebanon.

I think Costa Rica seems safer and more stable than most other Central American countries.

  • 9orchids

The article says a lot of what is in Harry Dent's book: “The Coming Depression of 2010 and how to Survive it.” Harry Dent sees us coming out of this in mid 2020s. He also sees WWIII here – maybe that is what gets us out of the depressions.

He sees a first recovery – bear market rally in mid to late 2012. He sees terrorism peaking in 2014 and then terrorisim “will die of its own success”. The more terrorists succeed, the more we and the world will unite to fight them – and they are on the wrong side of the growth and progress equation.

Lots more specifics in this book about what to do when.

However, we are approaching the month end, and money managers might be using the purchasing power to push up the future to paint a better picture. Yeah, actually I agree with you about Mexico…but I know people who swear that if you're not along the U.S. border (and a few other troubled places), life is good. I think Costa Rica or Panama would be better choices.

I loved living in Brazil, have great friends there, and would consider going there again. It is more difficult to get residency if you need a job – if you're drawing money from elsewhere I think no problem (but I'm not positive – we had to get residency/work permits). I'd probably not purchase a home – hard to take money back out – and I would NOT live in Sรฃo Paulo or Rio. The interior is safer (relatively speaking) but harder to find English – and you need to know what you're doing. Portuguese is not so difficult to learn, and people will help you make your way.
Don't want to take up too much time here, but I would be happy to give more information if you want – just give me your email address.

caught on the Toccoa river in Blue Ridge,Ga. WOW that was a nice catch… where was that one hiding out?

Nailed that one in a lake in the Eastern Sierras Nevada Mountains of California. One of my favorite fishing spots.

Vic, looks like you're onto something here. What periods are you using on your stochs?

  • Vic

The fast one is the standard 14 and the slow is 70. I don't remember why I used 70 -i made this like a year ago and abandoned it because I could not backtest it.
I was hoping I could backtest it and optimize the long stoch period, with no luck so far. Someone at the tradestation forum offered to look at my code. If he finds the error I'll let you know the results.

    Just solved it:
Performance report using 1 ES contract:

    http://screencast.com/t/QuxcBpOk2I4
    http://screencast.com/t/jtrmf84T

See the % profitable for longs and shorts? 67% for shorts and 50% for longs in a bear market. I'd expect that.

The strategy report is a bit misleading because I never coded stops, only entries and exits. I'll play with it this weekend to see if it would affect the profit factor.
