The Tortoise Nears The Finish Line

by The MoleApril 15, 2019

The ascend in equities since the lows right after Christmas of 2018 has been nothing short of stratospheric and nearly matches the time period of the preceding descend that launched in mid September. Which is rather interesting advances traditionally are known to be slow and awash with a multitude of retests.

Albeit not as violent as the preceding sell off this particular advance managed to make up what it lacked in volatility with mind numbing consistency. Like the hare that ran like wild, lost interest, and then fell asleep the bears somehow just dropped the ball in late December and reverted back into hibernation.

This triggered the starting shot for what must be one of the most hated – and ignored – short squeezes in financial history. I talk to a lot of traders on a daily basis and very few of them have professed any long participation over the past three months.

On the implied volatility front there isn’t much to report – which is how we like it. With a few occasional exceptions the SPX:VIX ratio continues to lead the S&P cash higher.

The one sliver of potential short term bearishness is the VIN:VIF ratio (the two main components of the VIX) which has started to advance in recent weeks, indicating that option sellers are starting to charge a slight premium on nearer term SPX options used in the VIX calculation.

Of course that doesn’t mean that markets are about to turn on a dime, it merely says that there is a slight increase in the expectation of a correction. Sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong – for now I wouldn’t give it too much weight but if the VIN:VIF continues to push higher I would start looking at more bearish clues. Thus far I see none.

    Good morning everyone? How’s tricks?

  • BobbyLow

    Mornin Folks.

HD might be on to something with Wheat being in complete Fib Control. I’m still long Wheat as of this moment and it’s just been poking along and really taking it’s time trying to make a sustained move in either direction. I have a relatively tight stop and if it gets hit so be it. I added to my Crude Short this AM and am still short BIO (LABD). These two have been picking up the slack so far today. 🙂

I think there is still a lot of farmland underwater in the mid-west that’s too wet to plant and or to harvest. Using basic logic wouldn’t this mean that there would be less anticipated supply? If there’s less supply and stable demand then what?

BTW, in another commodity hurt by too much rain, I have a friend who lives near me that lost his entire cotton crop because they couldn’t get machines on the land to harvest it. The machines would get stuck and become inoperable. The water table around here is still extremely high from Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael that followed Florence a few days later. These hurricanes occured over 6 Months ago!

Have to leave for routine Dr’s Appt. and just stopped out of Long Wheat for .7R Loss. All that was left on this trade was hopium and that’s not a strategy. Staying out of wheat for awhile. Still short Crude and BIO.

I don’t think RSI on TVIX is that useful because TVIX/UVXY movement is heavily dictated by the movement of the front month /VX contract. You definitely have to keep a close eye on /VX contract changes/rolls. There’s also SVXY for playing short vix.

I’ve traded wheat off and on for the last couple of years and to my eye it’s been trading kind of wierd for early spring. It’s probably wrong and I don’t use fundamentals to trade, but I read an AG newletter yesterday that said that it was possible for Wheat to have a 3 handle before it’s able to find a sustained rally. I can’t remember a 3 handle happening over the past couple of years. This newsletter was also lamenting about how badly the China situation has hurt grain exports.

I try to trade realtively short term swings and my last 4 trades of wheat have gone nowhere so I’m giving wheat a timeout for awhile. In the meantime, I’ll increase my R levels on the things that are working to make up the difference.

I received a notification from Gmail this morning asking if I had granted Samsung access to my Gmail Account. I have a Samsung Phone and have probably been using a Samsung app to receive Gmail for the past 3 years. This appears to have happened to many Samsung Phone owners. I’m thinking that an update occurred and triggered a bit of a panic that phones could have been hacked. Some people have been changing their passwords on their Google Accounts etc. I’m hoping that it was just an update that Samsung did that caused this. However if it was a hacker and access has already been granted, I’ve already been hacked so it’s too late.

Does anyone here have a Samsung Phone that this has happened to?

  • BobbyLow

OK this might be OK. Just saw this message posted on twitter.

“@Samsungsupport on Twitter replied and said this:

Why assume people are not investing because of some day to day thing

Most investors are long term, 95% of day traders blow up there accounts

In fact I would say anybody day trading has been and still is an easy target

When I first moved out on my own, my monthly phone bill was a bit more than $16 per month. Now, my land line is about $65. I keep it because it always works, and it’s nice and clear. Cell can be iffy sometimes in my location.

Geez, my arteries snapped shut just looking at that thing.
