There Isn’t A Sucker Born Every Minute

by The MoleJanuary 3, 2019

At least when it comes luxury electronics it appears that there isn’t a sucker born every minute, or perhaps we’re running out of them quicker than they are being produced. I’m sure my now you’ve all heard about the flash crash in the USD overnight which was triggered by a massive surge in the Yen.

A lot of that move has been reversed since but what exacerbates the situation is a revenue warning issued by AAPL alleging fading global demand for its handheld products and in particular throughout China. Gee, I really wonder why…

Could it have to do with the fact that there simply aren’t that many people on the planet willing, or capable, of plunking down well over $1,200 for an iPhone X when they can get a comparable one from Huawei for half that price?

Or could it perhaps be that Apple basically stopped innovating just about the time when Steve Jobs kicked off this mortal coil in late 2011 after which Tim Cook and his senior executives thought it would be a grand idea to to jack up their mobile phone prices by 20% every single year?

“Consumers are prepared to pay a premium for a mobile phone because it is arguably the most important product in their lives,” said Ben Wood, the chief research analyst at CCS Insight.

Found that little tidbit in an article posted just yesterday over at c|net titled ‘Why your iPhone and Android will cost more in 2019‘. Well that one didn’t age very well, did it now? 😉

Well, I’m no economist and neither do I play one on TV, but the chart above strongly suggests that some sort of bubble may indeed be in the process of bursting. And it’s not just in the luxury electronics market to be honest. When I left the U.S. in 2012 an expensive sneaker cost ~$75 and double hamburger ~$5.

Now people are happily paying for $200 ‘designer’ sneakers and stand in line to pay $15 for a patty of GM meat substitute, some lettuce and mayo, all wrapped in a bun of flabby wonderbread. It was great (for retailers) while it lasted but we’ve run out of easy cash and it ain’t coming back anytime soon.

I mentioned this the other day in the new year’s wishes I sent to all my readers: Stagnation is death. If you become complacent and stop innovating whilst asking more money for almost the same product or service, or attempting to hold them hostage in your own digital bubble, then don’t be surprised if your customers are starting to look for greener pastures.

And don’t get me started on Apple getting rid of standard USB and headphone ports. I’m still driving a top of the line 2012 MBP which has all of those including HDMI and a (drumrolls) SDXC card slot! And to be honest I’d rather pay $1000 getting it repaired than buying any of those naked new models.

In case you’re wondering: AAPL may be a BTFD opportunity here but I will need to see the tape after the opening bell first.

Here’s the USD/JPY on a 5-min panel with my brand spanking SQN indicator. Note how the buy back was as violent as the original sell off. Thus far it looks like the Dollar will continue to gain some of the lost territory back.

Same formation in the AUD/USD as well, which many consider a gauge of global risk appetite. Same momo pattern here by the way.

Not much of a response however on the E-Mini so don’t get caught up in all the doomsday predictions just yet. Now don’t get me wrong. We are in a pretty rough spot here and a six sigma move is omnipresent in the minds of most participants.

More below the fold for my intrepid subs:

I couldn’t agree more. While I think Apple products are good overall (I’m a windows/android guy personally because I’m cheap), price wise they’ve gotten too expensive, and I could never justify their products. I have always been a fan of their computers, as OSX is a solid OS (based on *nix), but their phones and decision to tie everything to iTunes drove me nuts early on. Either way, I think it’s a solid company, but like you said, they stopped innovating, and instead have just been increasing margins by raising prices.

The sneaker fad I’ll never understand. I’m in my mid-late 30’s, and it’s crazy to see people paying so much money for some damn shoes that cost $2 made in China selling for $300+. Blows my mind, but I guess it’s no different than baseball cards when I was a kid.. lol All sorts of “collectibles” go through “phases” just like any other asset.. fascinating to watch.

Bulls want to hold this level or we’re likely going to head significantly lower. Looked like they might hold it together at the open but not looking good now.

Objectively AAPL is still arguably the most innovative company. 50 million airpods sold in 2018? Agree it is a luxury brand. If you’re music person, like me, it’s the best choice. proprietary iTunes/iPhone are seamless.

  • https://evilspeculator.com Sir Mole III

For real? Wow… yup, maybe we need a big reset.

  • https://evilspeculator.com Sir Mole III

    Everything must go.

  • 1coin3lives

Yep, for real. It was basically a copy of a Crocs-style shoe made of injection molded plastic/foam or similar. It cost something like 3 cents to make the shoe and another 10 cents to make the box. If I remember right it sold for around $40 or $50.

  • Sp00nman

I get why people like Apple stuff, because it tends to “just work,” which is often not the case with tech products. With that said, I always found Itunes for windows to be a POS, but that was years ago, perhaps it’s gotten better. Their decision to lock everything down drove me nuts.

Business models have been changing over the years to milking customers, and we’ll see if we’ll get some mean reversion. A lot more subscription based software models and getting rid of useful features in phones (headphone jacks and microsd slots) is the norm. Google and other android mfrs have followed Apple’s lead in this respect because they can, but I’ll just keep my old stuff as long as possible.

  • Julie 35 – 25 – 36

I know Chief. A reset is the best thing to happen. As mentioned previously in a post we knew this was going to happen and a lot of pain world wide. The conclusion will be a better place.Bubble after bubble after bubble. Time for reality. Again the nation will survive and be better for it.

Some great lines in the post today Mole made me chuckle. And I agree with your conclusions.

As I type, SPX is only barely holding above the lower channel line (Julie’s), having pierced it earlier. I know I have a bearish bias presently, but does look like the bulls have run out of steam to me, and a rush for the exits could be shortly upon us. Please don’t forget, the Brexit issue re-appears shortly, the PM will lose her vote, and there will be repercussions, an election probably, Brexit will be up in the air. Prepare accordingly.

Late to the AAPL party today. Agree on expense of iPhone being an issue. I was ready to replace my 5S this month, but the new phones are a.) Too damn expensive, and b.) Too damn big. I have relatively small hands, and don’t want to try to hang on to those monstrosities. Additionally, I don’t want to carry one in my pocket and be mistaken for carrying heat. Yuck.

So, I managed to find what’s advertised as a new 5SE (old stock) on eBay, and it’s on the way for a mere $250. I got 4 years out of the 5S, so I think I can get that much out of the SE.

I have a top of the line 2016 MacBook Pro, and while I love the speed, the limited number of ports sucks ass, and I’ve had to send it back TWICE due to minor shit like a hair under the keys, requiring a full top case replacement because of how it’s constructed. This kind of shit is untenable.

I’m long AAPL shares, and covered calls mitigated the damage today. I might actually sell the shares on a bounce of any significance. My basis is a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away…

I will be with a client, great, no chance to act, unless I fake a need to use the bathrooom and speak really quietly with my broker.
May just go flat before it starts, I do suspect Powell will attempt some mild dovishness.

  • TimeToPanic

I nearly understand that. Thanks, good night.

Guys We must be careful short. The SPX could still go up. I have 2433 as a level to watch. Another level that I have posted repeatedly is 2482. Approx 2482 – 2484 will break above a downtrend line from the high January 2. A bullish close above the daily 13 ema could send the SPX up to targets 2573 and 2579 as posted previously. Above 2579 targets 2639 and 2643

What do you think GG … ? Tomorrow possibly 60 min chart with a bullish reversing candle above the 60 min 8 ema OR a bullish reversing candle 2 hr chart at levels mentioned. Remember 2452 is a level also and could take off from there if a reversal. SPX just a few points shy 2452

look at the bpspx late 2015.
we are down lower, so YES it’s a bear market.

a bottom will work out as usual, with a run back up to half-way.
    52-12 = 40 points delta, or 20 + 12 = 32 level.

Julie, for sure the ~2430 area is important (note we’ve tested below it around the 2420 area a bunch of times), but 2430 was the low that held throughout most of 2018. It stopped the decline until the Fed day and is a LVN on the volume profile.
