Top And Bottom Performing Stocks For Week #3

by The MoleJanuary 14, 2018

Once again it’s Sunday so let’s review the performance of last week’s historical top and bottom stock symbols in the S&P 500. As you may recall these symbols are the result of parsing a database containing over 50 years worth of statistical performance data. The idea is to extract the prospective top ten winners and losers of the coming week purely based on historical statistics. The result is then sorted by liquidity and any symbol that is scheduled to report earnings or pass ex-dividend is being excluded.

How To Trade Along

Although being no guarantor of success, the long and short candidates posted here each week are intended to perform along their respective historical bias. One way of trading along would be to simply create a small one-week portfolio by buying the long candidates and selling the short candidates on Monday morning shortly after the open. There are no official stops or targets and all transactions are reversed Friday afternoon right before the bell.

For anyone who wants to keep track I have created a new WP category that allows you to pull all pertinent posts up to date. Eventually I’ll be putting together a summary spreadsheet once we have accumulated sufficient stats.

Results For Week # 2

Long Profits: INTC=-3.35, XRX=9.56, HPQ=5.38, BSX=5.74, GILD=6.04, CVM=10.26, AMAT=-2.11, MYL=5.3, GLW=3.03, MUX=3.93

I’ve finally produced a spreadsheet in my Google drive which shows us the entire P&L stats including adjusted totals, cumulative, and drawdowns. You can open it in your browser by clicking here.

I am thinking that UUP has decent support at 23.7.
We will see what happens Tuesday after people have had 3 days to think about their positions and how much the market has climbed so far this year.

    91 on $USD.
Looking at GG $USD Chart from a couple days ago, it could definitely go to 88 as GG arrow shows, but it also looks like it could be painting a higher low and that green ENV line appears to be forming support.

That is a very timely and useful observation. Its real….we know its real…in a environment where little seems real anymore. It obviously may come to nothing….but only for the time being. Looking at the weekly, it may still around an inflection point.
I am glad that I am not in a position now. 🙂
Still, I am looking and with us being at, what looks like an important point to me, I have the feeling that a strong move will happen, but I am not sure yet which direction it will be.
Either this is a going to be a bottom for a while that is painting or of it can’t hold this, it may fall a lot more.
This level looked important in 2014 as well.
Obviously, I could be wrong and I am still not sure which direction it wants to go, but I still feel like a powerful move in either direction may happen.

  • Julie

    1625 JULIE

  • Wave_surfer

This big exhaustion spike could possibly lead to the big 3 day (or even 2 week!!??) crash we have been fearing!
    I tease myself.
I lost too much money nursing my bearish bias for years. Every dip was the just the beginning of the coming justice when the world would be made right.
But they all ended up being dips, of various sizes, that enables further climbing.
Scott’s training reminded me that one of the first questions to ask ourselves is “Are we in a trend or a trading range?” and we are in a bullish trend. so, we are in a trending bull market and a fall that erased 30 minutes and a gap up, does not end that.
Anyway, I guess I am just teasing my former self as a way to remind me that all I care about is selling things for more than I bought them.
Things can be ‘wrong’ or ‘crazy’ for eternity for all I care anymore. No more trying to inflict my will on trillion dollar markets.

  • http://gerb-reloaded.blogspot.com/ Gold_Gerb

    Happy New Moon, rats.

  • HD

Check the timing of the introduction of futures! Jmho

  • Wave_surfer

I can read. 🙂 And you can write perfectly well. 🙂
I guess my point was too vague and subtle.
saying 1625 at this point may seem like you are saying it can climb a lot, but with RUT, when it climbs after a correction, it can climb a lot more than 40 points.
Just in that short term graph, we have 1350 to 1510 in a short time, like a rocket.
Then after a ‘brutal’ 6 week correction, we climbed another 150 points.
We are still in a trending bull market that started years ago and RUT is volatile.
so, my point is, in a trending bull market with a fast climbing volatile index, then if you want to say it ‘could’ climb higher, maybe saying 240 points is more appropriate than saying a 40 point climb.
And just to be clear, I am not being mean or snide or anything else like that. I was just trying to be playful and humorous while reminding all of us that in a trending bull market, if the index continues to go up, it may go up 15% more and not just 3% more.

looks like a ramp-n-camp for now.
    no edge.

  • Wave_surfer

ya, I have been doing that for the last couple of weeks.
    1) we are in a long term trending bull market
    2) we have had a lot of recent gains
    3) https://evilspeculator.com/statistics/?symbol=DIA shows that this week often is a down week correction before more climbing.
    4) This week started with an exhaustion spike and then a fall.

What conclusions should we get from the above facts?
Maybe that things are pleasantly, boring and uneventful and ‘on schedule’ The question is will this correction be hours, days or weeks?

  • http://gerb-reloaded.blogspot.com/ Gold_Gerb

  • Wave_surfer

Out biases shape how we see things.
We are in a long term bull market and I see a double bottom from a 2 and a half month correction with a slightly lower price with less momentum.
That long, slow, stable exhale (aka correction) can be the fuel for the next climb.
    Next stop over 60?

  • BobbyLow

The Dow hit 25,000 and then 7 trading days later spiked up to 26,000.
After that much work, a little rest before resuming the climb would make sense.
Zero was certainly valuable in understanding that chasing that 26,000 spike would not be wise.

  • Wave_surfer

Yep and the zero showed that this was an exhaustion spike.
The question is whether this is a 2 day, 2 week or 2 month correction before climbing 150 points again. That trend line is fairly steep and it doesn’t take much correction before there is room to climb into the future again.

XHB weekly chart overbought monthly weekly and daily. Possible failure at upper weekly channel esp as stated in post below the previous 8 trading days 4 have been distribution A bearish close below the upper trend line would not be good https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/bc80f34b45bdf86b381a19a8ee929e2320a91bd39f7d08d21cdeed83f820bad6.png Shown XHB weekly chart JULIE

What was the mechanism of injury? I got that a few times playing billy jack…LOL

  • BobbyLow

I think I keep reaggravating the same injury that happened about a year ago when I did some work in a crawl space and had to stretch out using tools in severe positions etc.

I’m now into almost a year of that strain and have no idea on timeline, had Scan last April before Inca trail hike and they couldn’t find any traces of the C word. Abductor was the call, nothing you can do to heal it, hurts like a bitch on certain days, really strains when surfing or hiking…was popping muscle relaxers all the way up the Inca trail. Worst muscle strain I have ever had, and I had a full blown hammy strain that you could see bulging on my leg….

I think acupuncture might work but I haven’t tried it, just been too busy or lazy to go, I just go with it now as part of aging and call it an ache….fuck those people who say getting old is great, there full of shit…

  • Darkthirty

yup, mine will give me a tweak randomly

  • BobbyLow

Thanks RW. This sounds spot on.

I did a lot of research before I found out about what the Adductor is. And you’ve helped confirm what I think I have. I had looked up groin pulls, hernias etc checked for lumps etc and nothing matched up. When I saw a picture of the location of the Adductor “Brevis” it matched up perfectly. Unfortunately, I have a strain on both sides and I know how I reaggravated them the other day. I have to see my doctor for a routine appointment in a few weeks and I’ll bring this up at that time. I didn’t think there was much that can be done for this other than allow this situation to get somewhat better on its own until I reaggravate it again.

You’re right about getting old but the good thing about it is that it beats the alternative. 🙂

  • Mark Shinnick

Oh…Since you have history, look into the nutritional thrombolytics nattokinase and serrapeptase. Its not without a unknown but likely low-level thrombus risk, but their slow molecule-by-molecule removal of scar tissue appear to help recover a lifetime of injury and return flexibility.

  • Mark Shinnick

Yeah, made a shitload of money today…but still short all that after objectives or overnight ??no friggin way! My own accelerated models indicate that time now governs, not so much price in other less emotional times. Its more like a French curve function….humm always thought the French were a bit …emotionally curvy??

  • ridingwaves

I did the hernia check also….it makes a groin pull feel like nirvana….I had a surfer friend that was under the abductor spell for a year and he finally stopped everything to let it heal..and he did…..so far my dog hasn’t agreed to not go for walks….so I’m screwed…..good luck with it BL….I agree on alternative…..I really do think acupuncture will work and am likely to try it in next 30 days….will keep you updated…..

I think I did mine taking a huge palm off a truck, it was one where someone was getting rid of it so we went and picked it up, brought it back and the 3.4 ft drop holding it just sheared both of the abductors…..I have it on both sides also….I was pretty damn ecstatic that I was able to hike up to 14K…or it was the coco leaves and muscle relaxers mixed with some pain relievers….

  • Mark Shinnick

Ahh coca leaves….have to put those on the bucket list.

Two days in a row now of a green SPX, no bad news, just an ever increasing VIX. Having done well the last year on the short VIX trade, yesterday stung a bit. I wonder if this is coordinated to relieve positioning pressure for big players and the ETF issuers, after the recent articles on all hell breaking loose if the VIX were to rise say, 5 in one day? Even before I traded VIX I don’t remember seeing anything quite like this before.

  • StockTalker

Added to /YM on the retrace, shall see if rewarded this time.

  • BobbyLow

Thanks for the info RW. As they say “misery loves company”. I’m sorry it had to be you but sharing your situation offers me a sense of relief about what it is. 🙂

BTW, I forgot to mention about Jimmy G going to the 49ers. I think you got a real keeper in that trade. There was no way the Pats could keep both Brady and Jimmy G. They also never thought that Brady would be playing at such a high level at 40 and there was also no way they could trade him.

nice call on the 26K backtest yesterday. 25982 close enough for me!

Thanks Mark. Don’t think there is any interest in BTC here as Mole’s crypto posts didn’t generate much discussion nor did my $7000 call.
    No worries.

NEW POST! — not one to be missed.
