So far BTC has held. Everything else didn’t.
Now if your first reaction to that sentence is relief, we need to talk. Because that is the exact false comfort this market is serving right now.
Everyone with a seed phrase is staring at the same two lines this weekend: $80K below, and $84K above. Bitcoin is resisting a drop through $80K like it is defending the Alamo, still down a shrug-worthy 3% on the week and 4% on the month, but still comfortably floating about 10% above its gray 200-day. So far so good.
But everywhere else is starting to look like a garage sale. ETH is near $2,350, down 13% in thirty days, sitting at a 60-day low, and trading under both its orange 20-day and the blue 50-day.
LINK is off 18%, SOL 17%, DOT 14%, and several of them broke key structures on the same daily close. That looks like a coordinated exit, not a few coins having a bad week, the kind of synchronized selling you usually only see when someone yells fire in a theater.
Of course I know what you’re thinking right now:
“Is capital rotating into BTC because it is the least scary corner of a burning building? Or is the alt breakdown the leading edge of a drawdown that BTC simply hasn’t joined yet?”
The price data confirms the breakdown. But it does not confirm the cause, and neither does anyone else. Tough call with the FOMC announcement days away.
System Update:
My trend-following system Gravitas flipped bullish on August 19th near $69K and hasn’t budged since – it’s stubborn like that, which it got from me. And why would it – the current long position is up about 16%.
Which goes to show: Trend following is the art of being wrong small and right big, which is a polite way of saying you accept small losses to catch one big move. Which everyone imagines doing but almost nobody seems to be able to pull off because of ‘muh opinion’.
Bottom Line:
BTC holding $80K is not a signal to hold or add altcoin exposure. For one, a flat benchmark next to ETH at a 60-day low is not exactly the pinnacle of strength. At best it is capital sitting on the sidelines waiting for instructions. It’s not accumulation or institutional trickery.
The path forward is pretty binary. Either the alts reclaim their broken levels, which suggests the breakdown was a fake-out, or BTC loses $80K, which confirms the alts were the canary in the coal mine. Until one of those happens, wait for instructions, which is at minimum BTC back near $84K with ETH mustering up some green candles.
The calendar that could resolve it is dense: FOMC Wednesday, GDP Thursday, and the midterms the Tuesday after. It arrives with the market already split, so watch ETH’s broken levels as much as BTC’s $80K. Hey, at least it’s gonna be a fun week π
