XRP is up about 4% this week, and the crypto feeds are busy explaining why. Some credit Ripple’s final OCC approval for a national trust bank. Others point to crowded long positioning. Neither story holds up well against the tape.
Here’s what the tape actually shows. XRP is up about 4% over five days and still down hard over 30 days. It sits just above its 20-day and 200-day averages and below the red 50-day SMA. That’s a bounce inside a damaged month, not a repaired trend.
The OCC news is real, and it matters for Ripple’s business: the charter puts the reserves behind its RLUSD stablecoin under federal supervision. But the final approval landed on October 26th, more than a week before this bounce started. It wasn’t the trigger.
The positioning story has a bigger problem. The bullish posts claim far more long than short exposure, but the reported derivatives data points the other way. XRP futures open interest jumped about 30% to $1.3B with short sellers piling in, and shorts on Bitfinex reportedly surged more than 650%.
Then the shorts got squeezed. Across crypto, short positions accounted for roughly $534M of the $773M liquidated over the last 24 hours. That’s the fuel behind this move: bears getting forced to buy back.
Which is why the bounce is broader than XRP. Crypto recovered alongside equities after the midterm wobble, helped by cheaper oil and a softer dollar. ETH is up about 6% over five days near $2,400, but still below the blue 50-day SMA around $2,500.
When the whole group bounces together on short covering and stalls under the same kind of unreclaimed trend line, you may be looking at a relief move into resistance. What matters most after a fast reversal is the follow-through, or the lack of it.
Participation is the other problem. XLM is weaker on the day, the week, and the month. It’s clearly the laggard of the group. And if this were a genuine altcoin bid, the weakest names would be getting dragged a bit higher too. For now at least, they aren’t.
BTC is up about 2.7% over five days, sitting near $80k and still under the orange 50-day SMA around $82k. Gravitas, my trend-following system on BTC and ETH, flipped bearish on November 2nd and then back to bullish on November 3rd, both near $77k.
Absolutely annoying, but that’s what a trend system sometimes does near an inflection point: it takes the small hit, reverses, and stays on the right side of the tape. And let’s not forget the 12.59% profit ($8,728 per BTC) it booked when it closed its prior long.
It’s now riding this bounce with roughly a 4% cushion, simply because psychologically difficult trades are easy to take when you don’t have a psychology. Second-guessing signals used to be my specialty, until I smartened up, fired myself, and replaced myself with an algo years ago.
Takeaway
This bounce is running on forced short covering and a friendlier macro tape, not on Ripple headlines. Squeezes end when the shorts run out, and after that price needs real spot buyers to keep going. The bullish read gets real if XRP reclaims that 50-day area and strength spreads beyond one token. If it doesn’t, this was a relief rally paid for by the bears.
One housekeeping note from the equity side: Payday Friday closed ABT and HD this week, both at their profit targets. No decisions required, which is exactly how that system is supposed to behave.
If you’d rather have this kind of read show up as signals instead of homework, that’s what the Alpha streams do. Crypto Alpha covers BTC and ETH, the same pair Gravitas has been trading for years. You can check it out here.
Cheers,
Michael
