Wall Street bull and bear frenzy

“If your trading system needs you to be smart, it's not a system. It's a liability.”

The Binance crash had a head start

Well that didn’t take long! The past week has been full of emergency patches and breaches, and it was only a matter of time until it was crypto’s turn. Binance just got hacked for roughly $6.3 billion.

What the headline doesn’t cover is the timing. The market cracked first, and the news showed up afterward like an ambulance chaser with a fitting story.

BTC price chart

Now here’s where things actually stand. BTC tagged $76K and sits near $77.3K, down about 3.5% on the week and 9% on the month. It’s resting on a $75K-$76.5K support shelf, with the red 200-day SMA near $73K as the next line below.

The flush was real. Over $1.3B in leveraged positions got liquidated, roughly 85% of them longs, and Fear & Greed reads 30, the crowd finally noticing what the alt charts have been saying for a month. Whether that forced selling is finished or just paused is the only question that matters.

Now the detail the hack debate keeps stepping over. BTC broke down out of a bear flag and lost the $80K shelf before the headline existed. The hack poured fuel on the move. It didn’t light the fire.

ETH price chart

The alt tape says the de-risking started weeks ago. ETH is down about 18% over the past month and XRP about 16%, against BTC’s 9%. Weakness has been working its way up the liquidity ladder, and BTC’s support test is the last domino, not the first.

SOL price chart

SOL is down roughly 18% over the same stretch. Same direction, same window, worse damage. This market was selling the risky stuff long before it had a headline to blame.

BNB price chart

BNB is its own case: the house token of the exchange that just lost $6.3B. If the contagion story has legs, this is the chart that shows it first.

Look at who actually paid for this move. Most of those liquidated longs weren’t wrong on direction. They were too big to survive being early. At 20x, a 5% move against you is the whole stake, so being right eventually and being liquidated now is the same trade with different timing. I’ve been that guy, and the chart doesn’t care how good your thesis was.

Gravitas flipped bullish on August 19th near $69K and is still sitting there. It’s my long-term trend system on BTC and ETH, so a one-week flush was never going to trigger it. BTC is still up about 11% from the flip. That’s the benefit of getting in at the right time.

The contagion question isn’t the size of the hack, it’s the response. Binance says it’s covering losses from its SAFU fund, with about $3B frozen and withdrawals resuming inside 48 hours. If that holds, the FTX comparisons stay a scenario instead of a conclusion.

The options board has an opinion too. November max pain reset above spot after $78K gave way, and it’s now acting as overhead resistance. One more reason $80K is the number that matters.

So the levels are simple even if the answer isn’t. Hold $75K-$76.5K and reclaim $80K, and the flush-and-hold read wins. Lose $75K, especially with the 200-day near $73K, and the bear camp’s $66K-$62K targets go live.

Until one of those triggers, the evidence favors patience and small size over heroics. Calling the bottom is free. The liquidation tape shows what being early costs at size.

If you’d rather have a system reading this tape than argue with it, that’s what Crypto Alpha does for BTC and ETH, the same Gravitas flips, live. You can check it out here.

Cheers,

Michael
