Follow The Yellow Brick Road

by The MoleMay 11, 2009

UPDATE 2:44pm EDT: I hate to bug you guys with the same chart for the third time today but frankly it’s the only one worth looking at:

Follow the yellow brick road, rats. If we bounce this ‘retest’ – (i.e. MM buy/sell churn) then we’ll rally into the close. If we get a breach, we might hit at least the middle of this channel today or tomorrow.

BTW, I have updated all evil.rat and resident.evil stats/charts – go take a look. There will also be a change to the SMS module – instructions have been emails to all subscribers and it’s also been added to the evil.rat page.

Good call on SMS change… The old way wasn't working for me anyways;) Keep up good work mole, your work is greatly appreciated;)

  • molecool

BTW, T.K. pointed out DRYS over at the Slope as a long and I actually really like this one…

  • molecool

You have no idea what a time sink this turned out to be on my end. It's working now but it's expensive as hell.

  • BigHouse(Aka Mr Vix)

I hope the yellow brick road goes down to 33.50 on the Q's

  • katzo7

Now Imo WE SEE SOME DOWN ACTION unless ppt SHOWS.

  • salvadorveiga

Mole what about some international guys here?

For example both I and Autopsias aren't able to follow that way… already tried with Gmail and it doesn't work =/

  • Keirsten

Works for me too. Plenty of close support below.

  • MyLifeMyTrade

Isn't that true every day, every hour

  • Autopsias

Salvador we need to find a way for this to work for us Europeans, I'll have a look, if you find out a solution post it here, so we can take advantage, I'll do the same.

  • Autopsias

Let's give Mole a break, let's see if we can find out a solution, start calling your telecons and bug them for the bloody SMS gateway…
Maybe in Portugal it works… Here in the Netherlands I know what the answer will be, the same as always… Neyyyyyyy 🙂

  • Keirsten

Edit- waiting to go in depending on that trendline Mole. Probably going to leg in here and there.

  • geckoman

Mole, I was following your Q down channel from this morning and just redrew it, moving the channel up a little. To be frank I know you know that trendlines and such are not precise and very subjective. Anywho, this new channel I drew is about as valid as the channel you have. Dont' see why one is better than the other. Just something to look at.

    http://www.screencast.com/users/geckoman/folder

  • katzo7

Nooooo. IMO trend has changed to down although I would really like to get some distance in from the top.

  • ontheball_offthewall

    Hi Mole!

First, love the site. I am learning a lot.

I was looking at your evil rat statistics and have a silly question; how much do you start with? is it as simple as you made 175% in profits, and your profits were $50612, so you started with $28793? (50612/1.75) ? Just seems like a strange sum to start with. Also, how much are you trading each time, the entire amount of the base capital, not reinvesting the proceeds, correct? Sorry for these simple questions-just trying to get up to speed.

I am trying to build some systems with strategydesk; its fun and frustrating. I have a simple strategy for FAS that seems to work well right now, but will probably blow up when normalcy comes back to the market. Here are the stats (for these stats, trading $5000 each time, not reinvesting, and assuming $10 round trip commissions.

  • salvadorveiga

Yeah I'm trying to find a solution if I come with one I'll let you know to see if it works in Holland as well…

“Fast Bucks How Porsche Made Billions”
    http://www.docs4you.org/forum/index.php?showtop

Over two astonishing days in October 2008 one of the most amazing stories of the downturn emerged. Porsche, the luxury sports car manufacturer, was revealed as the force behind an audacious takeover bid for Volkswagen.

The price of Volkswagen shares rocketed fivefold, and it briefly became the most valuable company on the planet. And hedge funds that had been betting on VW shares falling in the downturn found themselves staring at losses that ran into billions of pounds.

Now the German authorities are investigating. It has been alleged that the much smaller German car maker Porsche manipulated the market, made a fortune and ended up potentially taking over its rival.

Porsche insists it has done nothing wrong. But for years it has quietly stalked its larger rival, buying up VW shares in a creeping takeover and making vast profits in dealings on those shares. It has been highly effective, last year it made four times as much money from share trading than from making its iconic sports cars.

The Money Programme's Max Flint travels to Germany to investigate how Porsche became so expert in playing the market and how it could end up with the biggest prize of all: control of its rival.

  • Vendrell

    Random reply from lurker/semi-commenter:

I've been following this site since October 2008 and it's been a real pleasure to see it grow, both in the community and your commercial enterprises. Not quite sure how you fit in this many hours into the day, but I'm glad to see your hard work pay off. You certainly deserve the success you've got now.

  • anthem

Hey mole, there are some of us that don't really need SMS alerts and are just as happy with email alerts (on blackberry's) etc. Do you want an option to not send SMS alerts. Will that save you some dough ?

  • fuw

It is noteworthy that TRIN has been stuck in the 1.3-1.7 range the entire day, after the morning spike, which adds to the bearish case.

  • Osso

based on…???? its being killed ata 15% daily rate….

  • salvadorveiga

read the page… it's based in 1 contract!

So if it started trading with S&P at 1000 points that means it started with 50,000 dollars. since 1000 * 50 for each contract is 50,000 USD….

all the values respect to 1 contract

  • molecool

Is it me or is this tape getting more random by the day?

  • Osso

    6.17 looks a possible RS….?????

  • molecool

Sorry guys – I can't make everyone happy. What I do know is that the current system bites into my subscription fee in a major way. So, I can't afford to continue in that fashion.

  • standard_and_poor

If today is an abcde diagonal (w4 of 5 )we should bust through 918 soon?

  • MyLifeMyTrade

Yeah.. I see this as gift from god to again load up at prices below 7.. when it was 11 and above, I thought it had run away…

  • Autopsias

Whilst you were designing your systems, MM's were designing a new one… Ultimate A.R.R (anti rat randomizer)!:)

  • MyLifeMyTrade

It is random indeed … the action today seems more like Opex DAY and not the Opex week…

  • BalaB

    hmmmm….pretty smart idea.

  • DoubleNaughtSpy

I saying are hear what you. 😉

  • Thrownaway

Regarding my post this morning over at SOH regarding PLM:

Shame nobody bit on that — I know that's easy for me to say, since I got in way lower, but when I posted this morning, it was at around $1.65. Now it's at $1.90. 16% gain for a few hours in a stock wouldn't have been such a bad play. 😉

  • http://tradingsigns.blogspot.com/ T. Waffle

Playing between 914 and 910. Annoying tape. I am sitting on cash. I will go short if it touches 918-920 area

  • Squidman

Are you looking for a 5th wave next?

  • Autopsias

I knew that when Mole took the US citizenship that was a nasty idea, in time he would betray his European brothers!! :):)

I'm gonna have a word or two with my Germans “neighbors” 🙂

We understand, let's see if we can find a solution for us.

  • katzo7

    Here we go, hold on.
    Hehehehe.

  • lester

let the buggery begin. I have taken a long day trade on XLF, reason being the market almost always finishes strong last two months.

  • BigHouse(Aka Mr Vix)

    New Lows on the XLF..Hurrrayyyy

  • fuw

    Now let it bleed…

  • ontheball_offthewall

i see that now-my bad for not scrolling down. chart overload.

the 175% in cumulated profit is then cumulated gross profit, right? if you include the losses it would be closer to 100% cumulated profit?

Thanks and will promise to read more before i post.

  • lester

I am an idiot, that was exact wrong thing to do. Out for minor loss.

  • alphahorn

    listo???

gracias, Meredith Whitney, you get an assist!

  • MyLifeMyTrade

I agree that the trend is *changing* to down… Although I am not sure what to make of the surge in QQQQ today…. At the same time I will add that they are still far far away from the highs of last week.. So, may be this is like the last hurrah for Q's before they go down… In any case, after the dump at the open, there isn't much that is working well for me… Most of my longs from ES 908 are underwater even when ES is at 912… because most were in energy which is now playing catch up to the downside… Lets see how we end… close is the tell.. .if we rip into close.. then may be we still see 940… if we close with ES around 910 – 915…. then i will agree that the trend has changed…

pushing lower or another fakeout ?

  • Keirsten

?????!!!!! What does your chart say to you? The rules change daily- this is OPEX week. They can move this sucker sideways and burn the options to smitherings for the next 4 days. IF XLF has exceeded Friday's high and THEN pulled back, that's when you might, and I emphasize might have wanted to go long that hunk of junk. You have to continually ask yourself intra-day- did this go higher than Friday or not. If it did, that “might” be bullish.

  • salvadorveiga

    no…175% net profits

  • Basilfawlty

    Wondering out aloud:

Is it possible Lester is persistently and consistently making obvious mistakes just to get the “tender loving care”treatment from you?

  • lester

I saw support at 12.40 for last three hours, so I took a gamble and bought. It broke 12.40 as soon as I bought. Shit.

  • katzo7

Sorry, no derrogatory talk against Porsche.

  • molecool

    LOL 🙂

  • Douala

    Keirsten

DryShips Inc. (DRYS, $6.87, -$1.13, -14.13%) declined for a second day after
filing a prospectus to offer up to $475 million in common stock. Cantor
Fitzgerald cut the dry bulk shipper's stock-investment rating to sell from
hold, following downgrades by other firms

  • Keirsten

I think I might need some therapy soon. HA! 🙂

  • molecool

    🙂

  • tranchefoot

It's facing bankruptcy. The CEO, George Economou, has been self-dealing with his privately owned shipping company, Cardiff, for years. Much speculation that he is planning to drive DRYS into bankruptcy and sell DRYS assets (purchased with investor $$) to Cardiff at distressed prices. There are other dry bulk shippers out there without the financial problems of DRYS. DSX and NM seem to be the strongest.

  • Osso

vamos MW……hay que matar esos bancos …!!!!

  • Squidman

My bet is Keirsten goes postal on Jester before Opex!

  • lester

Wow, I bought DRYS back in 2006 for $12 and sold one week later for $10. Have not really been following them since. Good thing.

  • katzo7

No, he is a sophisticated GS MM who is gaming us. I know it!

  • katzo7

I will be there for you girl, any time, any place. LOL

  • Keirsten

Thanks Douala- Yeah- I'm sitting it out except for a scalp intraday possibly tomorrow. Has a clean line of support- will wait to see if it gets there and how it reacts down there.

  • Keirsten

    Thanks Katz. LOL

  • Squidman

So basically for the past 3 years you've been buying high and selling low.

  • salvadorveiga

hey Indu…. where do you see us ending the day?

Still see the 900's or do you expect coming higher form here a little rebound ?

    thanks

  • katzo7

I give up. Lester you wore all of us out.

  • Thrownaway

People seem to have missed the news announcement on this. I talked about it on Slope. This stock's most recent drop is based on fundamentals (they just announced a 30% dilution, and the stock has dropped 30% in two days), not technicals, so I don't believe that trend line Tim used applies.

Also, from my post on Slope:

    #
    Also, regarding DRYS:

I was in and out of DRYS several times last year, and made good profits. This year, I've had very bad luck with it in trying to call the bottom, for one specific reason: George Economou. DRYS' Greek CEO is a total bastard. He's on the record in interviews saying that American investors are the dumbest in the world, and there are numerous articles detailing the ridiculously shady conflicts of interests that surround the business dealings between his public (DRYS) and non-public companies. He operates DRYS like a personal piggybank, and while traders (including myself) have absolutely adored it for its volatility, the CEO has on several occasions completely blindsided shareholders (always to the downside) — including this most recent week, when he announced another massive dilution (without explaining why the additional capital was needed, making people nervous in regards to its debt obligations, which the CEO has already had to try to get waived). He made no mention of the need for this new issue on the conference call ONLY TWO WEEKS AGO.

I have no current position in DRYS, and that's why. If it drops to absurd levels, I'm in, but not here. George Economou carries too much risk with him.

“He operates DRYS like a personal piggybank”

    +1. Dead on.

One of my favorites is how he maintains a personal fleet on the side and sells whatever he feels like for whatever price he wants to DRYS.

  • lester

I should have gone with my original plan to go short XLF if it broke 12.37. That would have worked.

  • indusequities

Back from lunch meeting with a client and nothing changed.. 1410.. missed my target by .25 🙂

  • ontheball_offthewall

stupidly confused or maybe simply stupid

if I start with 50000 and make 87950 from that my return is 87950/50000 = 175.9%
if I start with 50000 and make 50612 from that my return is 50612/50000 = 101.2%

isn't 87950 the gross and 50612 the net?

the system looks great-just trying to understand the stats.

    thanks!

  • annamall

Double what?? Not today it won't IMHO All the financials are weak. Meredith Whitney just spoke about how the fundies in them were not any better and they were just fund managers chasing them.

    /NQ losing it's mojo.

That would be hilarious! IMHO the fakeout will for the bulls not the Bears today! Squiddy
I took a pic of my Rocco ( I rescued him) and he looks almost identical to your beautiful panther cat! 🙂

  • salvadorveiga

i know what you mean…. mole would be more suitable clearing those doubts… it has something to do, with that the capital entered is always the value of 1 contract…

which means the value of 1 contract decreases everytime the index goes down…

    I am short NQ @ 1400

  • Keirsten

HAHAHAHAHA! Takes a lot to make me go postal.

  • BalaB

This is somewhat amusing: Normally you'd see a moderate amount of selling (as a fake out) around 12:30'ish, only to get short and be slammed with buying pressure.

  • arak0

    Is your name Indu? :-))

  • lester

OK I am just gonna watch you experts and follow along, I have to say it was quite confusing today though, lots of bullish sentiment on this blog sucked me in. I was originally thinking short and I would have been right.

  • annamall

    He's the master dunce!

Well, in fairness, during the 07-08 insanity, there were times where DRYS was up over $120/share. I'm convinced that that retarded volatility is where it got its institutional following.

No I was doubling Keirsten's reply!

I have held FAZ when its below 4. When its in the 5's the last few times, I've not held it. I think its going to oscillate between 4.5 and 5.5 for awhile until something really breaks out. Not sure the break out is this week though.

  • disrespekt

This guy has to be fkin trolling…nobody could trade this badly and still have any money.

    Lester,

You are killing me. 90% of what you read on any blog is %$#&* including this one. There are some skilled people here I'll admit and listening to them can be a way to learn. But remember they are likely sitting with tight stops and willing to get out on a losing trade.

“It's better to be out of the market wishing you were in, than in wishing you were out” – Words to live by. Let the trade come to you.

As I mentioned earlier, you should setup a paper trading account and go wild with all kinds of ideas – you will learn a lot doing it. Learning with real money that counts is not wise. Now I would say using some real throw away money to learn is useful as it will help the emotional side of trading (which frankly is what kills me almost every time).

  • annamall

BIG fakeout for the Bulls! awesome day! Selling more /NQ @ 1396.50

Little corrective move / gap up in the morning, then a nice big move down.

    Wow CTIC up 30%

  • BalaB

    Laugh Snicker Snort.

The moves definitely took place a little later than what has become customary (i.e. over the last three-four weeks) and were also a bit sloppy. However, did you notice how cut short they were (AAPL, FSLR, etc)? There wasn't a lot of leg room to keep running….

But yes, you're right in that you need to be taken out back and shot! I don't have stacks of paper repeating the following phrase (in painstakingly hand written cursive!) over and over: “I Do Not Lack Discipline”.

  • katzo7

Jeeez guys, all I got was fucking 3 points today for making all of those calls today? Go back and look what I said all day. What a bunch of cheap bastards. LOL Now I know who not to go drinking with. I even gave you the time when I saw it switch from bull leaning to bear, 3:20 but I saw it at 3:19. Go back and look at the chart at that time.
I said close of 906 it closed 909. So missed by 3 points. Oh well.

  • annamall

ahhh poor baby! I will go drinking with you! 😉

  • Lawrence_Chiu

Great trading today indus! I am amazed you called the NQ top by 1-tick.

  • v8muscle

meh, closed a little further down than I expected. My call was 920 and we closed at 909.

still seeing lots of buying EOD on XLF, Q's, SPY and IWM. IWM is inside its channel also, so i'm still holding onto my longs.

I've been thinking about that too since we both went in on it. They raised an incredible amount of money lately as well.

HAHAHA Katz. That beast eats more than I do every day. I can't even fit him into a regular sized cat carrier- he has to go in a dog carrier when he travels.

    =^..^=

  • indusequities

Normal trendlines and patterns. Only difference is, it will be in multiple time frames and different formations.. Can't really explain and even if I can I would not share.. I don't think any trader would share his secret to anyone.

  • indusequities

Missed your question.. Sorry. SPX is tricky. I don't see this going below 899 in the next two days due to opex week. But we've to trade below 900 level before friday.

I don't think they will give this that easy for anyone. So we could potentially gap down to 898 level and run up again to 816.00 level..

If we trade near 903 area, I'll take some long position to hedge against my huge NQ shorts.. For better clarity this week will confirm.. There is no another week for this market's directions.. either close the way its supposed to close or gap down or break away gap on Monday..

  • arak0

You mean Monday after Opex. The is another possibility, but a low probability event … ES closes the week around 875 setting up a bullish spring for the following week.

    Not derrogatory, quite the contrary.

Oh, I love your babies!!! I'd have a thousand of them but then they'd think I was one of those crazy cat ladies. I always feel so bad when there's a nat. disaster like a hurricane and so many are left homeless or abandoned. 🙁

  • Squidman

    Wow. What a beautiful spot.

  • Squidman

The official number for crazy cat lady is 4. Just in case you are keeping track.

  • annamall

He does look like your gorgeous baby doesn't he. He had one day left to live, and no one would take him, so I got an emergency call and he has turned out to be the “best” 🙂

I am also a new student of Nandu’s style of trading. What I have learned from Nandu is using trend lines from different timeframes.

A trend line needs to have 3 or more point of contact to be a valid trend line, the more contacts the more valid it is. If the trend line is violated so is the trend.

A monthly trend line has more importance over weekly, and so on. I am not sure how smaller the time frame Nandu uses, and I believe whatever the intraday timeframe trend line he uses is to predict the potential target for day trades.

I also believe the slope of the trend line. If the slope is too steep, the trend can not be sustainable for a long time. Too flat also loose its validity.

Nandu, please correct me if I give any misinformation. TIA.

    Thanks so much Keirsten
Now remember Haley Berry in Catwoman? (hot hot hot …;-))
I have a huge property and take in the most needed ones, but it's a cool feeling 🙂

You try my chix recipe yet?
    Pound chix breast thin.
insert goat cheese and chopped pecans, roll up, insert toothpick
    saute on all sides.

    For sauce
reduce two quarts of homemade chix broth to about 1/3 cup, constantly stirring and working in burnt stuff on edge of pan. Ad no thickener, careful with salt as when reduced gets very very salty
BTW, do not use to impress boyfriends, just me!
